Basically mufflers.. since its a Y pipe each side needs its own Muffler.

Edit: Oh I realized you were circling the offset muffler as described in Davidv's post OOPS

Offset muffler or baffle. Instead of routing exhaust through resonator and muffler, some designers are using baffles to decrease noise.

Advantage: Decrease noise with minimum effect on exhaust volume and velocity.

Disadvantage: Additional expense. Weight. You also have a potential failure point: exhaust pipe to baffle weld.

I thought that was the appendix. Just an inexplicable by-product of muffler evolution.

it's a waste of space and weight. the sound isn't the best either.

Helmholtz resonance chambers. In the axle-back section, it is used to eliminate unwanted frequencies such as those that cause nasty drone. A perfect example, and one that I've experienced first-hand, is the difference you find between the Motordyne Shockwave V1 and V2 exhaust systems. For those who don't know, it can make a HUGE difference.
