Inside the HKS Exhaust H-Pipe
gary it wasn't directed towards you.. it was just in general. i'm just trying to show the community this what we're paying for from a "reputable" company.
SQ-I've had the ebay tips for over 10k miles now and there is no discoloration. the gauge thickness is much thinner than the HKS but i don't think that really matters as it is for looks anyways. as you can see in the pics it's still shiny and the tips are still bluish. They make great replacements. you can't beat 50 bucks vs 200 each from hks.
sorry i didn't take the after pictures when i cut out the protrusion.

Or looks nearly as good with a bumper tuck on the oem rear. Thankfully it's a fairly simple fix (if they all have the blockage) and with a magnaflow x pipe you have the ability to throw on non resonated tp's with little to no rasp. I'm going to check mine out this spring and if that pipe is there I'll be doing exactly that.
received an email back from HKS:
Thank you for your inquiry, this same image has been sent to us several times in the last week.
As we had noted to all the previous inquirers:
The image you show is not how the exhausts are designed and we have been selling this exhaust since 2005 for the G35C. The 350Z exhausts have been in production since 2005 as well.
This could be an isolated problem in which you can follow the standard warranty protocol for warranty procedures.
The you will need a copy of your receipt and you will need to contact the dealer you purchased from.
The 350Z/G35C Hi-Power Ti exhaust systems carry a limited 3 year warranty against manufacture defects from the original date of purchase and covers the first owner only.
HKS will determine whether a repair/replacement is necessary after the product is shipped back for proper inspection.
Thank you.
Wondering if it's worth taking off the y/h-pipe and sending it back? Or better to just do the x-pipe mod and be done with it. I was hoping to not chop up the thing but I don't want to be waiting 3 months (which is likely what would happen with HKS) for them so do something about. Or worse, send it back saying it's fine.

I've already come to the conclusion that I need to replace the crossover with my own design and quit being concerned about it. If I find the restriction you can bet I'll send it to HKS with a note and my opinion of their quality control....nuff said!

I'm an HKS nuthugger blah blah blah. So we've got that out the way.
Come on guys, really! He bought the exhaust for 400 bucks from the previous owner and it was trashed. If it was in that condition when he bought it, then god knows how many times the previous owner had the exhaust fixed!
That looks like a complete amateur job and definitely not something from HKS. Ok, so some of you say their welding quality went downhill, but for christ sake, it's not as bad as that!
I have A LOT of HKS gear on my car, and i can hands down say that ALL of it is top notch quality. ALL OF IT.

So you went for the nismo Z and then went cheap on the parts for it? You sort of just defeated the whole purpose of buying a numbered nismo car. Why not just buy a base Z and throw on a knock off nismo parts/body kit of lesser quality? Anyway, this isn't another "authentic vs knock off" debate thread. It should be kept on topic relating to the HKS exhaust and a problem somebody thinks it may have. There's still no solid proof this a flaw existing in every exhaust hks produces. Nobody has shown a picture of a newer exhaust, with a picture of the blockage and proof that it's an authentic piece. Until that happens you can think what you want about HKS and their parts.
I plan on taking mine apart this spring and finding out exactly what's going on in there. If there's a blockage and the exhaust is an overpriced piece of crap maybe my opinion will change lol.

In the G35 forum there'a guy stating that that he took his apart and it was perfectly smooth inside.
The last HKS exhaust i had was also perfect.
I still think the last owner bodged it poorly to sell it.

yes i wanted to see for myself so i stuck a flashlight down the Y pipe and saw it through the resonator side. 40% of the pipe was blocked.
perhaps people selling their HKS in the classifieds can do the same since they have it off the car. but i doubt they will since their resale will suck if that info was provided lol.

Saturday I'm going to remove/replace my crossover and I'll let you all know what I find. Ya gotta know if I find that restriction I'll be sending my parts to HKS and asking them why? Sure a lot of HKS systems for sale just in the last two weeks....
