Question about mods and Z longevity
Hi guys, my base stock 07 Z is being shipped from across the country now, should be coming next week.
I'm already thinking about making performance airflow modifications to the car but I have one question before even starting: how does making airflow mods affect the longevity of a Z? My engineering side wants to improve and optimize things, but my common sense side is telling me it's not worth voiding the warranty, spending a lot of money, and decreasing the car's longevity for small performance improvements.
So obviously a lot of people mod their cars so it can't be all bad, but I just want to get an idea of what exactly I will be doing to hurt my car if I do airflow mods. Or am I being a noob and these are totally safe mods to do?
Thanks, glad to be part of the community here

Congrats on your new Z!
Airflow mods...Are you talking about a CAI(cold air intake) like a PopCHARGER?
Since about every forum member has this mod,it would seem like its no big deal.
If you have a concern about "voiding your warranty, you may want to pay through the nose for a NISMO that should be covered since its a Nissan part.On the engineering side that you mention, don't look for any big kick in the pants from a CAI install. The OEM air box with a drop in K&N does fine.Your Z will sound more aggressive with a CAI,and with other mods..plenum spacer, exhaust system,tune...you may get some extra ponies. All these bolt ons IMO are not going to hurt your car, make it "not last" and not be "safe".
When you get into FI(forced induction),thats a different story. It seems as a noob, you are not thinking in that direction.
Hey,get your Z.Bolt on some mods.Drive your car and enjoy.
The hell with the warranty!

Yeah I'm pretty sure that the basic bolt ons haven't affected anyone's longevity on their engine. I mean, yeah FI is a different story. But take care of the engine (oil changes, etc.) and from what I've heard it's bullet proof. Granted my engine is VQ35DE '04 with only 44600 miles on it. But I've seen plenty Z's with over 200k.
