has anyone run MD ART pipes on a stock exhaust?
Actually, the op asks both, but your point is taken. It's a result of the stock system allowing them to rasp, proven by the fact the shockwave system (which is essentially straight through) has no rasp.
I just picked up a set of the newest version of the MD Art Pipes for the 2007-08 HR engine. I will be installing on a fully stock exhaust and I will post the results once I have done so...maybe even make a youtube video.
I just installed a set of the MD Art pipes on my 2007 350z with the HR engine. I have a completely stock exhaust and I have the Ingen long type intakes. The car sounds stock until you accelerate. When under gentle or hard acceleration there's rasp. It's not weed-wacker rasp, but it's not the desirable exotic kind either. It's the hissy wheezing type of rasp.
I plan to eventually get the Motordyne Shockwave exhaust so I don't want to pay $600 to get the XYZ pipe, since I will have to take it off once I get the exhaust system. I'm thinkin the Megan Racing Y pipeMegan Racing Y pipe for the HR for $150 might be a good temporary solution to killing the rasp...what do you guys think?

Firstly, it sounds like a leak, check thoroughly first.
Secondly, go ahead and get the XYZ pipe, it's part of the Shockwave system and when you're ready for the Shockwave, just get the remaining parts (that's what i did)

The New shockwave exhaust comes with a built in Y pipe, so the XYZ pipe wont work with it. Also, it is not an exhaust leak. I used new gaskets all around, and all flanges line up, and everything is super tight. I have lots of experience with exhaust leaks (I have an old 240sx) and this doesn't sound like one.
Just going off the pics on the website, the Y pipe that is included with the exhaust system looks smaller in diameter (2.5'') and it is bolted to the rear section of the exhaust where it splits into dual pipes (the stock exhaust is still a single pipe at this point). The XYZ pipe looks like it is 3" in diameter and you need an extension such as a straight pipe or resonator to fit it to the stock rear section...so what you are suggesting is that I could get the XYZ pipe... but then what I'm saying is that once I upgraded to the full exhaust, I'd have to get rid of the extension straight pipe/resonator so it could bolt up. And the Y pipe would be 3" in diameter when the full exhaust is supposed to have a 2.5" Y pipe and a 3" rear section to progressively get larger...so If I got the XYZ pipe now, I'd have to remove the straight pipe/resonator at the end of it to bolt up to the new rear section of the new MD exhaust, and the whole system would then be 3"...please correct me if I'm wrong.
Right, for a second there, i thought Tony had decided to redesign it all again (not happening)
So the shockwave changes after the mid box to 3 inch. The extension on the XYZ pipe would be removed and the mid box for the shockwave just attaches there, it's the same system.

Because I thought that the shockwave tdx2 exhaust comes with a 2.5'' y pipe and the XYZ pipe is a 3" y pipe...
???
Yes, I know that. Which means the shockwaves Y pipe is 2.5 inches where it bolts up to the cats, and 3 inches where it bolts up to the midsection muffler. My question is about the XYZ pipe that you can buy by itself. What are the pipes like on just the XYZ pipe? Does the XYZ pipe have 2.5" pipes that merge to 3" at the end?
I don't even know why we're having this discussion. If you call/e-mail them, they will get right back to you with the answer that they use the same XYZ pipe for everything because they didn't want to re-invent the wheel.
I don't think you understand what i'm saying.
1) The XYZ pipe on it's own is the same as the XYZ with the Shockwave.
2) The piping *after* the mid muffler on the Shockwave is where it goes to 3 inches, not before it.

Remember that the xyz bolts to the ARTS, but from then on it's "V-clamp" to muffler/midpipes/axle back, so that would be an issue when using stock system to connect to xyz. The ARTs alone would really wake up your stock system; down the road pick up the rest of the TDX and you will be rockin'!

-weirdly, it showed my post right after yours, then when i reloaded the page, it put your second post before mine.. odd.
