Default Nismo intake filters replaced with K&N

Hi, guys. A local tuner shop was supposed to clean or replace my air filters. I have the 2007 with dual Nismo intakes (white paper filters. I was kind of surprised that they replaced them with K&N filters instead of cleaning them. They said the Nismos weren't cleanable. That surprised me because this is a very reputable shop.

Is this ok? No check engine lights.

The main reason I ask is because the cool intake noise I had before seems to be gone. It sounds much more like stock. Is it my imagination? I think it had a much better intake noise with the Nismo filters.

Strange?
First, the Nismo intake(actually made by AEM),doeas not use a "white paper" filter.
The filter is similar to the K&N,pleated/oiled...cleanable.I would think the sound
would be the same.I've never see a cone type filter in "white paper".

I bet they made a whole lot more money selling you K&N filters than replacing them with less expensive paper filters.

IDK if the nismo filters came out before or after the AEm "dryflow". here is a lnk, a lot of people make the mistake of tossing the filters thinking that since there is no oil it is not a washable filter.http://www.aemintakes.com/dryflow_air_filters.htm

I've had them for years. Here's a pic of them- clearly white and non-oiled.

It is cleanable, which is why I was surprised that they said it wasn't.

They are cleanable, but they are not oiled. I replaced mine with AEM dry filters (grey in color) because I didn't like the white. Not sure why they put K&N oiled filters on there. Why didn't you just google how to clean them?

I had the car in the shop for something else and asked them to clean them. When I picked the car up, they'd replaced them with the K&N. Is there a downside to using them?

Depends on who you ask. Some people are totally against oiled filters, but others swear by them. I personally don't think there's anything wrong with them.

The only issue I have seen with the oiled filters is they can screw with the MAF sensor if you over-oil them. Then you have to take the intake back apart and gently clean the oil off the sensors and the inside of the intake piping.

The key is not to drench the filter with oil, but spray it sparingly and evenly until the complete filter is just getting dark pink. Coating it til its red is too much.

On the HR, the sensors are only attached with two screws, so it would be a 5 min fix. But I agree, don't over oil them. Or when it's time to clean them, buy some AEM dry filters and sell the K&N filters.

I use the K&N cleaning kit for my NISMO intake but I don't add oil to the filter

This thread just reminded me that I need to clean my fiilter, it's been awhile since I last did it
