Default After months of searching..

After several months of seaeching I still cant find wether its better for performance on NA to:

A. keep stock midpipe and muffler and go w aftermarket HFC & Y pipe.

B. Get true dual

Ive heard true dual kills low end torque but raises top end, that is not what I want seeing as i rarely go over 85 MPH in my Z. Ive also read about the magnaflow x pipe mod restoring the "lost" low end Tq that goes along with true dual setup on an NA. I would prefer the look of true dual and would be willing to do the x pipe mod if loss of TQ would be restored by doing this. So before this thread turns into a "war" over backpressure or telling me to use the search tool, which exhasut is best for the NA setup that is keeping stock headers. I would like to get this cleared up before i spend the $$$ on dyno time. Thanks in advance for any and all help guys!!

My mods are :
HFC
MD 5/16 iso
K&N drop in
UPREV base tune

Stock midpipe and muffler... with its ~2.25" pipe diameter lol. Sorry but if that's even an option you did not search hard enough.

THats what i originally thought, until upon searching i get alot of people saying " i need the backpressure" and if the exhaust is too open i wont get any benefits from it unless i go FI (which im not)and it will lower my low end TQ? Im just trying to prevent from spending $1000 on an exhaust that is going to do the opposite of what i want. Thanks

All the stuff you are mentioning really will make much difference in "what you feel"
HP.IMO,from the experience from my car,I'd do HFC'S and a quality cat back like
a Nismo S-TUNE.Thats the set up I have on my 03 Touring.Along with a spacer,Mines
Throttle body and proper tune,I have substantial low end torque .

First off, a true dual and dual exit will look the exact same (for the most part, depending on brand) from behind the car.

Your research was poor at best.

Believe me, a quality exhaust ($1000+ brand new) will do everything you'd want. In my opinion, you're never going to feel a loss in torque because it's probably going to be nothing more than ~10rwtq, if any loss at all.

You are looking at the power your losing too much. Look at what flows best. The point is to get exhaust out of the motor as fast as possible for your application. I went True Dual because I plan on going FI. I did not feel any loss from the Duals.

I have spacer, test pipes, and the exhaust and getting tuned soon.

I just got HFC as I feel a LITTLE loss of low end torque.
Do i wish it was still there...yes of course.
but once i pick up into the mid ranges I can feel the gains .

Regarding OP.
Get HFC and any quality "dual" exhaust. If you are that concerned about power. I would assume you are building up your motor to the highest level???

The s tune is not a true dual. The sound is great. The system with HFC'S
really sounds good. Its a a direct /no prob bolt on.Actually, like all the Nismo
parts, they are contracted out from another company and a Nismo logo
is put om them. The S-TUNE is the same as the Fujitsubu.Thats who makes
it.You can check some sound clips online. Its not a loud system.

This is correct fully built NA, cams, heads, the whole shot. Wont be for a while before i get into the internal stuff, I just want to make sure i have a good setup until then which at that point, i will re tune it also. It just concerned me about reading on people losing low end TQ when they start modding the exhaust, particularly when they go TD. Thats the last thing i want is to lose performance just to gain sound lol

Moved to the correct subforum

If you can afford a Motordyne exhaust I would recommend one with your current setup and call it a day

When you say motordyne exhaust, are you talking about the xyz Y pipe and then stock mid and muffler? Or is it a full CB system you are speaking of? Thanks

Waizzz is talking about the full TDX2 Shockwave Exhaust.

& the ART test pipes if you can swing it.

So overall outcome is, exhaust really wont differ much in overall performance as long as it flows better. So all this talk of backpressure and needing it to keep low end Tq and whatnot is all just nonsense? Just buy whatever suits taste and overall outcome will pretty much be the same, sound correct?? Lol

This is a simple-worded article that I found years back that you should read through:

I say just get xyz pipe and change between cat, resonator, and strait pipe on all while keeping your stock exhaust. There is very little that can be done for less than $1000. The quiet exhaust that give performance demand the money from R and D (hks, stillen, motordyne, gtm, etc). Installing an exhaust with wider diameter is raising the tq higher in the rev range...so to keep it down you essentially need to "choke" it I guess, hence keep y pipe back stock and install xyz. Also get a better tune, especially if you can play with the vtc on the exhaust side.

Awesome info this is what i was looking for, THANKS! And that makes sense that larger diameter raises the TQ to a higher range, but i see that the xyz pipe is 2.5" inlet into what looks like 3" midpipe.

Would i be better off going w this exhaust setup to keep TQ low but also free it up.

Hfc 2.25" inlet/2.5" outlet
Y pipe 2.5"inlet/3"outlet
Mid pipe 3" both ends
Muffler 3"inlet/dual outlet

Or will the 3" mid be too big and lower my low end TQ? Im just trying to get the best understanding of the best setup to keep/raise low end TQ before i get on a dyno. Or will a 2.5" true dual with magnaflow x pipe mod and good tune yield the same performance wise in the lower rev. Keep in mind i will be getting on a dyno as soon as i get this setup on. Also what do you mean by "playing with the vtc side" lol sorry im still kind of noobish

Thanks in advance for all your help.

The vtc is a system that plays with the timing by advancing it for performance, mpg, drivability and a combination of all three. On the DE engines, not sure what years or if all of the DE variant motors...minus the vq35hr motor found in 07-08, you can tune and play with the exhaust timing not just the intake side. For example nismo vtc pullys can do this if you are running cams. They can be found at Z1Auto and Z1motorsports but are quite pricey. Essentially with the ability to play with the exhaust side of timing (adjust when and for how much exhaust is expelled from engine) you can play with your torque thought the rev range roughly.

Motordyne did this in their R and D to get the most out of their ART Test Pipes and showed better gains throughout the rev range and lowered the extra torque to a usable street friendly rpm, well best they could anyway.

Seeing as you have HFC already your best bang for the buck would be a cat back system that either includes the y pipe in the package or uses a true dual set up. Seeing as how you want a system that is quiet that limits you away from the cheap systems found on ebay or copy systems. Also it puts you in the high dollar range. If you get a y pipe back exhaust system meaning you are keeping your stock ypipe you are actually waisting money as the de ypipe is 2.0 to2.25 and can rob your new exhaust system of 20-30% power that you were to have gained...maybe even more. The y pipe is very important hence why I suggested the xyz pipe from motordyne with resonator....total is around 450 shipped or so.

Or look for power else places for example lightweight pullys which can add 2-3 at the wheels and to the air box mod which involves drilling holes at the bottom of the air box to get mor air in. And then get a proper tune rather than a tune every z starts off with from UpRev (get tune specific to your car). Spl parts did a simple bolt on Z and ran a 12.9 here in s.a. With stuff you are running now...minus a full exhaust and proper tune.

You can get the turbo xs exhaust in the classified section, I used to run it and it provided great torque from 2400ish to 5500ish rpm here are some vids
