Question K&N Cold Air Intake

Last night I installed the K&N Typhoon CAI. Most of the top of the inlet duct hangs down a little and is somewhat visible through the grille. Has anyone else with the K&N noticed this? Or is it just mine?

RIVERSIDE, CA – The incredible Nissan 350Z injects excitement into the sports car market. K&N Engineering helps the 350Z live up to—and even surpass—the Z-car legacy with a new carbon-fiber-accented Typhoon® cold-air intake system (Part # 69-7070).

Powered by Nissan’s award-winning 3.5-liter V-6, the 350Z’s powerplant produces 287 horsepower at the crankshaft. With the Typhoon® system installed, testing on K&N’s Dynojet 248 dynamometer showed a 10-12 average horsepower increase at the 350Z’s rear wheels.

ANY THOUGHTS?

There's quite a few threads about this already. The advertised HP seems quite overrated.

I've also read that the air box is made of metal and conducts heat pretty badly. One of the members did a great job of insulating it ... might be something worth looking at.

I have the same intake. Theres a piece of metal that bolts onto the scoop to have to clamped aligned to the factory grill. Mine aligns perfectly, cant even see it from the outside.

Well I've only gotten to take her out to do mostly local driving so far, but from the little bit that I've gotten to open her up, so far so good. Once I've gotten more time on the road, I'll comment more.

KISS, Phatmitzu, how did you fasten the heat shield in the back? The instructions said to use one of the plastic rivets, but the rivets are too fat. I was going to use a bolt, but I can't hold a nut in place and tighten the bolt at the same time.

The K&N will outperform the Popcharger.
Just look at the complete design.

The Popcharger is not restricted from where it can pull air like the K&N, the K&N is more than twice as much money, and ram air will only help you at high speeds and it doesn't help that much. My Popcharger stays very cool as well. The Popcharger will give you a lot more for your money.

I agree with FlybyZ. While they're close, the JWT popcharger seems to pull slightly more air in at 5000+ rpms, where the Z needs it most (runs richest).

The K&N is a good setup, but not a good value. It's the heat conductive metal piping and box that turned me off the most.

So now that I've had a week to play around, I have to say I couldn't be happier. I obviously can't compare it to a POP Charger since I've only had the CAI in my car, but there is a definite increase in power and sound. If I had to choose between the K&N and the POP Charger all over again, I'd go with the K&N.

Installed the K&N Typhoon. Difficult to detect gain in Horsepower. Car appears to be shifting a little easier, due to throttle response. After reviewing the forums, it appears there are various opinions about HP increases. Either you do or don't get increases. As far as water leaking into the intake, I'll get back to you. In Houston,TX we spenda good portion or the year flooding. Road conditions can get very brutal in Houston, with temperatures raising up to cooking temp. Good place to test with humid and very hot air most of the year. Summer fuel blends and true octane levels are sure to be paid attention to. Oh by the way my Nissan dealer in Katy,TX installed the K&N and makes no difference in warranty coverage.
