Default PopCharger Install Problem

I hate to admit it, but I had trouble installing the PopCharger. I don't see how this could be because I installed an X-Pipe and Cat-Back on my '99 Cobra without any problems.

I was able to install the filter, but was unable to install the heat shield. I'm assuming that there is no harm in driving around without the heat shield, but I may see a slight reduction in performance because of higher intake temperatures.

Here is what happened: I couldn't get the heat shield and the rectangular plate which attaches to the heat shield with bolts to fit tightly on the frame rail. After several attempts I torqued the bolts too much and bent the rectangular plate, making the heat shield even looser on the frame rail. I bent the rectangular plate back with needle nose pliers, but I still can't get the heat shield and rectangular plate to fit tightly on the frame rail. Do you have any suggestions on how to successfully install the heat shield? Do I need to buy a new rectangular plate since I bent it?

Also I found it impossible to punch holes in the snorkel and line them up with screws in the heat shield. Do you have any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Thanks for the help!!!

Default heat shield

When i installed my popcharger I never screwed the heatshield into the snorkel. I put it in like it was supposed to be screwed on but i just never put on the screws. It should fit pretty snug and u don't really need to put the screws in. I've have mine on for about 4k or so and haven't had any problems. Hope that helped

When you get the charger installed make sure the metal cone does not interfere with the freon line below it.. I had to add some rubber washers to raise the charger assembly (above the freon line )under the bolt that secures the bracket between the back of the charger and the car side mount..
As far as aligning the holes I heated up a sharp metal pick and pushed it thru the snorkel. Worked great..

Yeah. Ditto this. I don't see how it's even possible to screw the heat shield into the snorkel. Seems to fit pretty snug to the frame rail without it. No problems so far.

Gotta love that sound!!

I paved the way for the screws in the snorkel with a nail. Once I pierced the rubber the screws went in semi-easily. It was pretty much a PITA.

heres how i attached the snorkel:

1.) using a very thin drill bit, make a hole through the hole in the heatsink and through the plastic for the screw thats on top. it doesnt matter if you have to use the drill at a slant, just make sure the hole doesnt get wide.

2.) you need a special tool (i dont know if this is the official term, but my dad refers to it as the Z). you can pick it up at the hardwore store for like 5 bucks. its a small metal thing shaped like a "z" with a phillips head on each side.

3.) use the Z to screw in the top screw while someone is holding the snorkel and the heatsink together

4.) return the Z to the hardware store and forget about the second screw (its sufficiently secure)

hope this helps, cause if it doesnt your hopeless

Maybe I got a newer model....

but I was able to put both screws into the snorkel with little to no effort....using a short fat screwdriver.

Those screws are pretty pointy/sharp and ate into that plastic like butter...the short fat screwdriver gives you the torque you need.

for me, since the snorkel is plastic and the shield is quite bendable, i got my Gf to literally pull on the snorkel and the heatshield to an accessable shape. theres a lot of play. then i got a stubby screwdriver and forced the screw in without drilling in the opposite side of what was recommended in the instructions. once the screws were totally thru, i unscrewed it and screwed it on snug from the inside of the snorkel, out.... the reason for doing it backwards was because it was much easier to get at, and to tap a hole thru than to try to do that from the inside-out.
