RS*R (or Pro N1)

I just tested my RS*R without the silencers and it registered at 110 decibels on my Sound Pressure Level meter from 50 feet away. Sooooo SWEET.

It's loud!!

I think you are way past it. I believe it is around 95 and as Zspeed tested the RSR was at 110

You'll get used to the interior resonance, and as you break it in the exhaust smooths out ALOT.

But its funny you ask that question. The noise limit depends on your state. VividRacing is right, he read my other thread. I just got summoned to court for my exhaust by a CT cop so I've done a bit of research.

The tolerance seems to depend on your state. I've read that CA is 95 db or lower. Plus, CA is kind of ahead of the game when it comes to laws allowing motor vehicles to have aftermarket exhausts.

The didn't know the law in CT, but the cop was so nice to let me know that I was in violation. The law in CT basically read, "you can not have any muffler, canister, or exhaust system on your motor vechicle designed to amplify the sound." Which stinks, since that means just about ANY exhaust is illeageal, and on top of that it is up to the cops discretion as to what is too loud.

However, I found a noice emission law in CT that says any motor vehicle under 10,000 lbs may not exceed 80 db when stationary. Well the RS*R w/o silencers is 110 db. oops! (I simulated the CT noise emission test conditions)

The prosecuter told me I need to have the car inspected and return to court in 30 days. I will be going this week DMV, but will have the silencers in when they do the test. Hopefully I'll get a pass slip and then the court will drop my case. We'll see.

The stock exhaust is at 81 db when at idle. Guess you can't have that either. You should tell the judge it isn't designed to amplify the sound, it is designed to increase power and exhaust flow. Sound amplification is a result of this, but it wasn't designed to amplify the sound. The wording in that law is very unclear and if taken litterally then there is nothing wrong with your exhaust because increased sound was not the manufactures intent.

Get the Injen if you want your car to sound like a Honda Civic with a 4" tip! Fart can. Way too raspy. If you want your car to sound like it has a V6 get the Borla.

Thanks for all the input! I believe after thinking over everything, finding video clips and sound clips, I overall have decided to get the RSR. All the other exhausts seem great as well, but I think for the sound I am looking for, this one is the one!!!!

i have the nismo exhaust with the r/t cats and it sounds awesome. its so clear and sounds like a race car, not a civic. i was told it overpowers the sound of the injen with test pipes even though the injen is louder. it has a different bass level which makes you hear it over the injen. i am very happy with nismo so far

I'm running test pipes with a JIC y-pipe and it's not loud enough for me.

At idle (after the engine is warm) it sounds totally stock. If I punch it, it certainly get's a little loud between 3,000 to 4,000 rpms but I expected it to be way louder. On the highway, even when I step on it, it's only a bit louder than stock.

I will eventually install an exhaust system but I'm looking for something that rumbles and shakes the asphalt at idle. I'll probably go with either the JIC Spartan type II (it looks German) or the Nismo simply because I don't like the look of the cannister style.

What puzzles me is that my old car, a 1990 Supra Turbo was running a custom turbo-back 3" exhaust with an Ultra Flo muffler and a high flow cat and that thing literally shook the pavement at idle. It was so aggressive, so mean, so diabolical-I loved it. I used to creep through parking lots at 1,100 rpm's and it would set off every car alarm in the lot. (To put things in perspective, guys on Harleys would always give me the thumbs up sign...) That's what I expected my Z33 to do but it's falling way short.

Does anyone have any recommendations other than deleting the muffler or going with a cannister style muffler?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I have a custom made downpipe (no cats) and invidia. The turbo kit also seems to make the exhaust louder as well. I need to post up a vid, but i have had my dad follow me in his 04 CL500 - which is supposed to have no road noise and be well insulated tell me that my exhaust is too damn loud.

haha. wow, talk about grave digging.
I was gonna say straight piping from the headers, no muffler, and then tips. That's loud. I just heard a system like that yesterday at shopping center with a Scion TC. Holy crap.
