You just install the language pack, keyboards have nothing to do with it, and Kanji is difficult but hiragana should be learned at least, not trying to rag on you or anything.
Well, its tough for me, not to mention I'm still learning how to speak, as I only know the basics.
I have not had any formal teaching, just learned it from being in Japan. Then when in America, I have no way of practicing, so its easy to forget everything I learned previously in Japan.
And when I am in Japan, I either dont get a chance to talk to anyone, or everyone wants to speak only English so they can practice.
I've been to every Prefecture, except the ones that are military controlled, like some of the really small islands.
I mostly spend time in Hiroshima and Kyoto and a small town that I love- Takayama and the surrounding mountain towns, but I have been to every major city and cover the vast majority of Japan. There really isnt many places I havent been.
I've been to Okinawa only a 2 times, since its so far out. The islands are the areas I dont get to see very often.
I see, I visited Mainland several times, spend vacations in Hokkaido, but of course 13 years in Okinawa all over the Island working, scuba diving, DJ in the late 70's and early 80's as a part time job outside of Koza at the Hilton, etc. Left there and went to Oahu for 5 yrs, now in CA. Go back to Okinawa every couple of years for a few weeks visiting my friends.

Sounds cool, I only started going about 5 years ago. I intend to see the islands more, but its not as easy as hoping on a train, like I can with the mainlands.
