Who is having tranny problems?
My z is at the dealer right now getting the new trans.... A tech came down and drove to car with me to hear the horrible grinding going into 3rd...They tried changing the clevis and said it did nothing. I'll let you know how the new one turns out.

Cold trnasmission grinds when upshifting into third, but not when downshifting into third from fourth [so far, at least I haven't noticed].
I'll schedule an appt. at Concordville Nissan for the service people to acutally look at the car. I've been telling them about it for some time now, but haven't gotten it in there yet.

I have the third gear grinding problem, have approx 4500 mile on the car. I Plan on calling the dealer this week to see what they say, hopefully they will replace the tranny. I am really not all that disappointed in the problem, after all it is a new design, and we are the first beta users of the car, so I expect a couple of issues. As long as Nissan stands behind their car and does right by us I will be happy. This is the first Nissan I have owned, hopefully they will give the customer service I expect and all will be good.

Since owning nothing but Japanese cars and trucks since 1981, I hope this problem is going to be resolved quickly by Nissan. I didn't even blink when it came time to order this car and the Japanese usually build a very good product.
The last sports car I owned was a 1973 Corvette and I did nothing but work on it. In the last 20+ years I've had no regrets about buying from Japan.
I wouldn't want this trans. problem to haunt the Z the way the Taurus SHO had that mazda[?] truck trans. problem 10 or so years ago.

i experienced the grinding when i try to shift into third gear and i realized that i have to wait for about a period of three seconds between shifts to avoid that, but why should i have to deal with that if i'm the one dishing out the cash to pay for the car
it's in the shop now.............took it in yesterday 1/20/03
waiting for a call from the engineers to see how to go about it
just like all of you guys with this problem, i hope that nissan provides some good customer service and replaces the whole transmission instead
while the car is at the shop, i still have to keep up the payments, so basically i'm paying a car payment and insurance on a car that i'm not even using............i hope nissan understands that
i have had a good experience buying my car from gardena nissan and i hope that they keep it up
after i bought it, i told myself how this would not be the last nissan i purchase, and i hope they come thru for all of us and keep us customers and future customers happy
hopefully they fix the problem at the manufacturing stage so other 350z owners won't have to deal with this

You shouldn't be without your car for more then a couple of hours. I brought my car into the dealer the first time @ 7am and had it back @ 2pm. They told me they would order a new trans and call me when it came in. 2 weeks later I made an appointment, brought the car in @ 8am and had it back @ 4pm THE SAME DAY. Their is no reason they can't fix it in 1 day.... I am happy with my new trans and I put 5000 miles on it already...

could it possibly be driver-error (at least, in some cases)? not to start a mess or open up a hornet's nest here, but i recall seeing a lot of threads similar to this on ClubRSX last year around this time. I had a 2k2 rsx-s 6spd) - many people were complaining of similar problems (in both 2nd and 3rd) - some "fixed" it with redline / swepco (http://www.smartcart.com/Paragon/cgi..._num=944Swepco) - stuff that's been used and trusted on many cars, incl. my 951. others simply found the clutch pedal was in need of adjustment (I assume the 350 is hydro not cable, right?) and a VERY few others ended up with new trannys, probably more due to dealer sympathy / service dept's getting annoyed with them more than actual necessity.
The scary thing was, of those who got them replaced, several re-developed the problem later -- which led me to believe, it wasn't so much a design issue (honda/acura wouldn't have put in something if it was a known problem, the 2nd time, knowing they'd have to do it again). Perhaps i'm rushing to judgement here, and I hope you all resolve it, but my suggestion is, have someone who hasn't driven the car drive you around in it for, oh, 1-2 hours til they're used to it enough to push it a little, and see if it grinds at all. I'm not saying anyone here is a poor driver, but we often don't see the mistakes we are making in our own vehicles...
Good luck!!

I can certainly see your point, and not that I am a great driver, but I have been driving standards for 20 odd yrs. Also the tech at my dealership experianced the problem when I left it with them. The problem hardly ever occurs when the car is warmed up primarily when it is cold, also thinking it may be me I made sure that I planted the clutch to the floor prior to shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Lastly it is only happening in 3rd gear(at least for me) if it was driver error I would think it would happen in multiple gears. So I tend to think it is a manudacturing defect.
Just my thoughts
Just my thoughts
In the case of the 350Z, at least mine, the 1st trans was a POS. This is the 7th manual car I have owned and I have also dragged cars before and also autocrossed before. So, in my case, I do beleive STRONGLY that it is NOT driver error. My original trans had issues from about 1000 miles and on. And I did not beat on it. Now I have put over 6000 miles on the new trans with the NEW Cleavis that they installed and have not had 1 problem... An engineering investigator from NNA came from California personally to look at my car and to try the new cleavis. IMO, I can see even a possible recall in the future to have this peice replaced. My trans was so shot already that they had to replace it. You should of seen the guys face when I took him for a ride and made him listen to grinding, he actually cringed and said stop that..... The feel of the new trans and cleavis has a different and better feel than the original.....
