Default Leather wearing on top of steering wheel

This is going to sound picky, but after owning my 2004 Touring Roadster for almost a couple of years now, the leather on the top is cracked and starting to crumble.

It's the only place in the interior showing wear, and I haven't cleaned it with anything abrasive (armor all, etc.). Is this something I should be able to go after my dealer for? It seems like a wearable item but less than two years in SoCal weather shouldn't make it deteriorate this quickly...

Hmm, tough call. Does the car sit outside a lot? If so do you use a sun shade?

My 03 has absolutely no sign of wear.

I agree with Bixby, use of a sun shade should help keep

Yeah, hindsight is 20/20 unfortunately. If I would've known the material in the wheel was so sensitive I would've used a sunshade from the get-go.

Do I have any recourse?

I learned many cars ago to always use a windshield screen. I got the custom fitted one from my dealer. By the way, ask the dealer about the wheel.

Unusual wear and tear is a warranty item. An example is the seat bolsters. Is your car under warranty? Take it in and see what the dealer has to say.

How do you drive? I notice ALOT of drivers that hold the steering wheel on the very top (12 o'clock position) when drivin. Looks funny to me. You know what I'm gettin at. Did you wear it out by drivin like that?

You know I do drive like that the most when I'm cruising. I usually drive with one hand, on the 12 position.

So it's probably a combo of both the hot sun and the oils in my hand? Just strange that my wife's 2000 Honda Accord EX with 70000 miles on it doesn't have that problem while mine at 20000 does.

I'll complain to the dealer and see what happens.

I'm guessing no recourse. It's not that the material is more sensitive, it's because of it's possition it does get high exposure to sun. If you don't use a sun shade your dash will begin to crack as well. Tinting your rear and side windows is an especially good idea if your car is out in the eliments most of the time. Not only will it filter most of the damaging UV rays it looks good too. That plus a sun shade will provide great protection for your interior.

Can't help to try the dealer. I have an 03 and mine is wearing out on the bottom where I hold the wheel most of the time already.

Same thing happened to me on the steering wheel and on the shifter ****. They replaced the shifter **** but not the steering wheel under warranty. Doesn't make any sense to me...

Do you guys use any type of leather cleaners and conditioners on the wheel? I'm just curious because mine still looks brand new?

If yes, how often?

I realize mine is garaged most of the time but I do have over 30,000 miles on her.

Time to resurrect this thread. I have this problem to. There is excessive wear and wrinkling of the leather at the top. However, I have a 2004 and have approximately 10,100 miles on it, and my car stays INDOORS. In addition to this, I drive with my hands at the 9/3 position, so I RARELY touch the top. If I ever have to leave the car outside, I put on my sunshade, and my windows are tinted. Can someone explain WTF happened?

I meant to say can't hurt, not can't help, . Mine on my 03 is slightly worn on the sides where I hold it but not crumbling just wearing from touching it. That should be considered unusual wear I would say.
