I had just got back from Performance Nissan in Duarte and after doing an oil consumption test, my car was diagnosed w/ excess oil consumption!
The service manager, his name was Will, said they will contact me in a few days after they speak to NNA. I hope all goes well and that this is covered under warranty.
After 33,000 miles, my '03 6MT baby might need a new heart!
I'm just glad I decided to wait for the engine warranty to run out before going FI, otherwise I might have been screwwwwed!
Will keep you posted.

damn...plz keep us updated as I'd like to know what happens. I only did my most recent oil change about 2000 miles ago and I've already had to pour another whole quart of oil into my Z to keep her within spec.

Hello, I have the same problem, 2003 350Z, We were changing our own oil and noticed that we were a quart shy each time when we drained the oil. So Nissan told me to bring the car in every 500, then 1000 miles inbetween the oil changes. Well finally the results came in and the car lost 9/10 of a quart of oil in 3,200 miles.
Nissan dealership states will have to call Nissan headquarters and speak to an engineer. They were to call me by Tuesday, today is Wednesday and nothing.
When I first told the dealership, they told me no way the car could be burning/consuming oil. Then they changed their tune and said that .30 of a quart between changes is normal. I am going to get a new motor out of this one way or another. The car should not be burning oil. I see that I am not the only one with this problem.

>1 qt/1k mi=abnormal oil consumption, per nissan. i know. i just had my longblock replaced for this reason.
add: anything less than that rate, and nissan won't do a thing.

Welcome to the club!
I have been burning 1qt every 1K miles since day one!!! NNA offered to rebuild my engine....I said F' that! I want a new engine...
Oh well, I am living with it. After 20 visits to the dealer for consumption tests (two seperate dealers) and oild changes by Nissan every 1K, I realized it was going nowhere.
Just so you know....there are many more with this issue. I have counted double digits from just this board and one other board.

so what? so they rebuild vs install a new one. the outcome will be same. its actually cheaper for them to install a new longblock than a shortblock because of the amnt of labor involved. as for a whole new engine, that's overkill and not needed to correct the problem.
I am not happy with Nissan and will not buy another one, no matter how nice the car is. I don't understand how they can get away with selling us cars that are not well built. I for one will never buy another one, nor would I recommend anyone to buy one. It is a fun car, but when you spend $35K you expect a car of some quality.
I for one am going to throw a fit and write as many letters as I need to, to get someone to do something about the car. I have to go back and have it checked again for the tire feathering problem.
Good luck to everyone else. Seems there are more problems with the cars that I first anticipated.

I think I was the founding member of the OBC. My engine was replaced at about 25k miles. I'm at 62.5k miles now and I've noticed low oil pressure if I don't change the oil before 5k miles. I really should be changing every 3k with my driving habits so I consider the low oil at 5k normal.
If you're at a good dealership with a good service director and service advisor, you shouldn't have too much difficulty with an engine replacement. It really was very painless for me and they even gave me a rental during the two days it took to swap motors.
Just make sure you're within the 60k engine/drivetrain warranty period and that you don't go FI before this period to avoid any problems.

Friend with 2004 s2000, 20k miles... 1 quart every 1000 miles... dealership said it was normal.
also another acquaintance with a bmw 330ci. 1 quart every 2000miles... BMW won't change engine.
Industry Standard for abnormal oil consumption is 1quart every 1000miles. NO one will normally change an engine if less than that.

I bought my car 4,000 miles ago used. It now has 26,000 miles on it and I have been having engine vibration problems for the past 2,000 miles. I took it to get it serviced and was told nothing was wrong with it. After reading this thread I decided to check the oil level and it is more than two quarts low. The dealership wants me to start a test to see how much oil I am consuming. What would happen if I let the engine seize up?
If engine seizes up, it's a catastrophe. This happened to my dad's Z32 when he took it to the dealership to fix some oil seals. Somehow they ran it without oil, and it completely destroyed the motor. Valves clicking like crazy, and possibly overheating which lead to crank bearings breaking apart and damaging the block. Dropped the oil pan and there were bits of metal in it. Of course, my dad did end up suing them because the dealership didn't want to pay for the damages after keeping the car for 2 weeks before the motor blew up. Hence, when it comes to my Z33 getting motor work done, I'm a little bit weary about getting the short/longblock.

UPDATE:
Got the word from Will @ Performance Nissan and NNA approved the replacement of my short block! Short block should be arriving in a day or two. THAT WAS FAST! I was expecting to wait weeks and come back to the dealership for compression tests and leak down tests. Didn't happen.
Now to get some cams and valve springs!

1 quart every 500 miles and smokes like a mosquito truck.
Hurry up Nissan and call me back!
Most likely a bad exhaust valve seal, but I cant wait for the entire consumption test I need something done NOW!
