What are the symptoms of a bad transmission? I have read quite a bit about the 3rd gear grind. My transmission is quite "notchy" and often requires more effort to shift into gear although it's not all time, but more often than not. I feel it in all gears. So, I am wondering if there is a pattern or some sequence of events before a transmission fails or becomes bad enough to need replacement.

I brought my 350Z into the dealer (Concordeville Nissan-Pennsylvania) this past week and they adjusted the clutch to catch higher. They checked with NNA to see what they recommended and see if there were any solutions to the problem. Their impression was that maybe the clutch was not fully disengaging and/or fully engaging when shifting. By the way, there was another 350Z at my dealer that was in for the same transmission problems. I saw the service technician reading printouts of posts from this forum that the owner had given him

 

What are you guys experiencing when your transmissions go bad? What is the process with the dealership and NNA? Any Comments?

 

don't know about the z's tranny specifically but common tranny problems are syncho's wearing down so the gears grind or you feel a strong resistant force before it pops into the gear detent when shifting (common when it's cold outside and the synchro's are sluggish due to higher oil viscosity). you can reduce wear on your synchos by shifting slower, as in 1st-N-2nd shift time. I was watching speedvision and was surprised at how slowly (relatively)the touring car driver upshifted. I was expecting a hard slam, but it was a controlled and delibrate movement.

double clutching and rev matching will help on the downshifts.

 

saccorator, how many miles do you have. Mine was notchy like that for about 2000 miles then loosened up nicely. I do have the 3rd gear grind though, havent' taken it anywhere yet.

 

I have 3800 miles on mine so far. I am hoping it will loosen up.
