Clearing ECU codes

OK, I did a search to find out how to re-set or clear the ECU but didn't find anything that actually discribed how it is done. Can someone please help me out here and explain the procedure. Thanks

I always thought disconnecting the battery for about 10mins did the trick. Maybe that on cars manufactured a few years back.
