Default getting in gear w/out pressing clutch?!?

i was cleaning the interior today. As i was putting some leather protectant on my shift boot and on the **** itself.. i accidently pushed it into 4th gear. It went in with out no force or anything. My foot was definetly no where near the clutch. Is this normal??? The engine was off BTW.

Like Scratchy said, very normal. You can even shift without using the clutch. If you're engine speed is matched perfectly with the transmission speed then the synchros are not required, hence, clutchless shift. The tranny is useful to know how it works, I'll see if I can find a link explaining how it all works on a manual tranny.
