Your hand has to touch metal while you are getting out and should be the last part of you body to come in contact with the car. Once your foot hits the ground and your out of the car the charge wont have a chance to jump and shock you as long as the hand stays on metal. There are web sites dedicated to this just because it sucks so bad.
this is what i use to keep from getting shocked. it may sound crazy but i keep a used dryer sheet in the car. if it is a day when the static is bad, i rub that over my seats and the plastic parts of the car. be sure to use one that is used, otherwise it will leave a white residue. since doing this i have not been shocked getting out of my car.
