Rack and Pinion Play
So I've read about the "clunking" sound from the front suspension area on hard turns, heavy braking, etc., and thought that the TSB for the control arms would take care of the problem. I asked the service department to inspect the issue and read the TSB to see if it applies to me. After completing the inspection, the tech informed me that the noise is coming from the rack and pinion, which is experiencing play in the unit. How much is uncertain though. Evidently, it will get worse over time and cause "memory steering", which is basically a worn-out steering unit that keeps turning even though the steering wheel is returned to the straight position. Fortunately, the tech recommended that I only observe the issue to see if it gets worse, and that no work was needed right away. My question for the board is whether anyone else has had this same or similar problem, and what was the resolution. Also, I had the tire feathering issue and had the tires replaced and the suspension re-aligned. Could the bad alignment had contributed to the increase in play in the rack and pinion? Thanks for any thoughts or advice. The car is an '03 Enthusiast model, bone stock except for 18" G35 rims and tires and Hawk HPS brake pads.
