Question Tire Pressure Monitor Acting Up

It started yesterday. Went off because I had 29 lbs in my left rear. So on my way home from work, I checked all my tires and filled them up to 34 lbs. The damn light has yet to turn off and it still says that all of my tires are around 30 PSI? Is it just because the weather in Dallas has been jacking us around going from 80s over the weekend to 30s in the mornings now? I know cold air is more dense, but I'm hoping this will go away when it warms up.

I can't hear any kind of leak on any of my tires, so I'm a little annoyed but a little worried. Any words of wisdom to share?

Christi,

You have to get the PSI up over 35 before the warning goes off. Once you do that and drive for a bit, it should go out.

Good grief! I thought we weren't supposed to go over 35 PSI. Oh well. Thanks, Brad!

Actually, you're supposed to maintain a cold 35 PSI. Check out the sticker on the inside of the center console hatch (the one behind your elbow) for the cold tire ratings. You should be heating up to around 37-38 PSI in normal driving and 39-40 in more spirited driving.

droideka: I'm sure that one isn't written in the manual. Great tip.
Christi: Did it work?

For some reason, and I'm getting it checked out soon, my sensors read 28-31 psi when 2 different tire guages read the pressure at 35-37 psi. I think it's just a calibration problem.

There is a reason the tire says 51 PSI max pressure on the side-wall. Because THAT is the pressure you're not supposed to go over.

As others said, 35 PSI is target cold pressure. I regularly get 40 PSI on my long highway drive home.

At the race track, when I was there a couple weeks ago, I was seeing max hot pressures hitting 46 to 47 PSI. I was driving VERY hard. I dropped the pressure in the tire to around 44~45 hot. The next morning I checked my cold pressure and it was UNDER 35. Had to put air back in them.

Anyone have any wear problems with the rear RE040's?

My rears have worn as if they have been over inflated. My cold tire pressure has hovered around 35 +/-1psi on avg. I have almost 20k miles and the tires need to be replaces. The thing that annoys me is that the reason they need to be replaced is just the center portion. The rest of the tire is fine for several more thousand miles.

Oh well....

Sorry to 'jack your thread Christi.

articfury,

same here my rear tires started show added wear in the middle and I reduced the pressure in the rear tires to 33.5psi cold. Rear of car is not as heavy as front, that's my reason to the wear.

If you got 20k miles out of them you got a lot more than most of the people I've talked to. :-)

I switched wheels/tires at 20K miles. The rear RE040s had increased wear at the center bar like you describe, although it was only moderately moreso than at the inner and outer edges - enough to be visibly ntoiceable. I consider 20K as acceptable mileage out of those tires. I ran a DE event at Hallett recently, and one of the rear tire center ribs developed a series of chunking/blistering at the leading edge that is very unusual. I am MUCH happier with the new GYs! Overall, the wear pattern on the rear RE040s I do not consider a "problem" - my three sets of tires on my 240Z wear out exactly the same way!
