I believe in breaking in any internal combustion engine. I even broke my new Honda lawnmower engine in yesterday believe it or not, I let it run at idle and fluctuated the throttle up and down a bit and left it run like that for around a half hour or so. I used to be heavily into R/C cars with them break-in is very important for the small nitro engines. It is always a good practice but it does not compensate for any manufactures defect that may occur anyway.

Default Oil

Using synthetic oil too early in the life of engine can cause an engine to never fully seat the rings, which leads to oil consumption.

I wait till I have 10,000 mile on a car, THEN use synthetic to keep the engine at that level.
