Let me just add that i know about the gearbox noises and clutch bearing noises etc etc....I am not talking about these noises...the flyheel is a separate component and the noise i am talking about sounds like your big end bearing is gone!

Just to follow up i have had another mechanic look at my car and he has identified the noise as between the engine and the gearbox. Booked in for DMF replacement in the new couple of weeks.

Replaced the clutch and flywheel.....no change!!! Now at Nissan Again tryingto diagnose. Head mechanic told me today that you can't expect any more than 100,000km (62000 miles) from these engines!

Help....you guys got any further?

resurrection...

So OP went thru w/ TSB's galore and no change.

My Z has been making this noise, more or less from day 1... It'd be nice to know a solid fix, aside from adding sound dampening material to my hood.

My 04 has a similar problem since about 3 months ago. I have been doing research on this topic. Here’s what I found:

The problem in my car:
The noise comes from the passenger side of the car. While sitting in the car with doors and windows closed, it is the loudest. The rattle noise only kicks in when engine is warmed up. I can feel a slight knock on the floor of the car (inside) just ahead of the passenger seat. Lift up the car and touch the fuel lines and they vibrate in the same frequency as the knocking. The knocking frequency goes up with RPM. I can hear a little of it under the hood, but more under the car.
There are other Nissan forums (Altima's, and Murano's) talking about a similar problem.
I took my car to the dealer, they confirmed my findings and said it is caused by the Fuel Dampers. The Z has 2 of them. To replace them, the cost is about $550 (part and labor). It does not cause any damage if it is not fixed, just annoying.
Looking into the service manual, here are the pieces I found:
The one with the Feed Hose seems easy to replace. Looks like the other may require the removal of the Fuel Tube. I don’t know the Damper part numbers at this time, and don’t have the time to try doing it either. If somebody want to give it a try and post here how it went. Post pictures if you can. If you need more instructions for the removal, I can post more of it from the manual.

I had the same knocking problem. It was noticeable inside the car and sounded like a rhythmic knock. Since I have the service plus extended warranty until October 2013, I took my car in to get it check. It turns out the sound came from the 1st cylinder so the dealer agreed to replace the entire short block and now the sound is gone. The dealer said it cost $6000 to replace. Luckily I had warranty and paid $0. Not sure if anyone else has the same problem but that's my experience with this weird knocking sound.

I have the same ticking noise also, so i changed the fuel dampers but the ticking was still there. So i used a stethoscope and i heard the ticking was worse on the injectors! I dont know if i should take it to the dealsership or juss change all injectors

Here's another resurrection. I just finished replacing the fuel dampers and the noise is still there. It's definitely close to the dampers as it can be heard even louder with a screwdriver to the ear on the fuel rail, but it isn't the dampers. Anyone with more technical experience needs to chime in. The car sounds like a diesel truck when warmed up. Could it be the fuel rails? Or something below them causing a tapping? I can feel a pulse to the same rhythm with the screwdriver on the rail, but then again the whole engine is rhythmic.

Does this seem like a reasonablr test to rule out injectors and fuel dampers:
Coast down a hill with the engine off and the car in gear. The valvetrain should be rotating and potentially ticking, but not the fuel system.

So is this something that can cause damage to the engine? I know the VQ's are reliable which is why I got a Z in the first place..

I've got the same exact problem! Driving me crazy. I can't get my head around how so many people have had the same issue or very similar at least.. yet no one has found the cause!

I've sound checked from various area's around the block and everything internal sounds perfect. So it can't be a lifter or a damaged valve. Which is a relief to say the least. but doesn't solve my problem

any updates would be appreciated

Bumping this up. I've got what sounds like the exact same noise. Has anyone determined a fix for this?

I don't think any one wants to have to go that far on mostly stock cars unless a built head is planned or some sort of head work
