Default PROBLEM : Long Term Storage

Hey Guys.

Well here is the story Im already out here at my duty station in Iraq. Had my car put in storage so that I could keep it safe and sound and away from my mother.

Well now already I have a problem the battery as now died twice in a three week span. Problem with that is the car is facing the wrong direction in the storage unit and the people I left to start the car dont really know the little "things" about how the car works.

Another problem: Im thinking now "should I just pull the battery and leave it and then change the oil when I get back?" Or should I let them handle the situation even through they don't know the first thing about driving this car w/ all the extra stuff on it. IE bodykit, electronics, turbo.

And again another problem: if I decide to just pull the battery and leave it. What steps do I need to take ? drain the oil, etc. What effect will that have on the Utec, blitz boost controller and other electronics ? what effect will it have on the turbo

The whole point being I want to car not to be handled as much as possible until I return, but I still want it in working order also. I dont want to come back to million scratches and dents and torn seats, and broken parts.

You all know how it is, you don't want people touching your baby. Only problem for me is I really have no power to do anything from this far. So its all through my family who again don't know a thing about is car.

Well any help would be great.

Thanks

Taylor

How long are you going to be gone Taylor ??? How many miles do you have on the Car/Battery ??----Lets say your going to be gone a year and lets say you have 50,000 on the Car/Battery.

If Im close.... you're battery is shot now.....there is no more margin for error. Somehow, get a new on installed. At the least, have it started and allowed to reach Temp twice a month and preferably a drive of 2 miles.
Dont do anything with the lubes til you return and then...do a complete.

Fuel in the tank ........`If you can do the above, keep it at the 1/2 tank level and have it returned to that level if it gets to the 1/4 tank level. When you get back, drive it til your almost empty and fill with fresh.

There will be many opinions, but thats my 2 cents

well your kinda close I'll be back in late Feb early march. and the car is just about 29000.

The battery is a brand new red top optima, and with the fliuds Im worried about the condition of the turbo from now until I return. And there really is now way to have it driven. My pops and step dad wouldnt even know how to get it out of the drive way. There only job was to start it and thats it.

and I told them to start her up every 2 weeks but the battery is already dead.

You need to get someone over there you can trust. There is no reason for that Batt to discharge unless there is a power draw. Your in a spot... At the least, arrange for a trickle charger to be put on it.

Your going to have to diplomatically get tough and make VERY clear your instructions with no excuses for failure to do so. If that car is started every 2 weeks and allowed to get to operating temp and then brought up to, say, 13- 1400 RPMs for say, 3 minutes, everything will be fine.

Theres going to have to be a little Crash Course via telephone as to what has to be done... If there is NO ONE for them to turn to for little probs and questions, then they can call me and I will walk them through it. PM if needed

Hey check this out...... I did a year away in Iraq recently.. I stored my car.. Unhooked the battery, added fuel stabilizer to a 3/4 tank.. and left it for a year.. Came back and the bitch started like I never left..

I dont understand why you didnt do this first off..... Secondly, its pointless to start the car up every 2 wks.. Ur gone for 1yr+ anyways..

You dont need to do anything to the oils.. Upon your return get an oil change, transmission fluid change, and power steering fluid change.. and whatever ur heart desires......

Haha, Ya im only going to be here for 7 months and then Im back and hopefully thats it for a while.

But anyway being it only 7 months and that my family is very close so I thought better if they can just run it every couple weeks.

Had I gotten better info last month before I left I might have tried that.

Thanks for the info I'll take that into consideration.

The biggest advantage to the starting every couple weeks and letting it get to full operating temp is to compensate for warm days and cool nights that cause a little condensation. Also to move some fuel through your system so theres no settling in the lines and injectors

+1

Starting the car every couple weeks also gives you the added benefit of lubricating your A/C system since the oil is mixed in with the refrigerant, and the seals get lubed during operation. Not running your A/C for a year will cause your seals to dry out and possibly cause leaks down the road.

Also if you can get your hands on a trickle charger, that seems to be a good easy way to maintain the battery until you get back.

Taylor, if the battery is discharging from a draw or for whatever reason, i'd have whoever is watching over your car get it started (jumper box or cables) then run it for a good half hour, let the alternator do its job and charge the battery up. Then have them disconnect the battery and only connect it back up every 2 weeks when they go to start it. I know you dont know me, i've been to a couple meets and seen your car (temecula Infiniti/Datsun show, Huntington Beach g2g) but i'd be more than happy to take the car out of the driveway if you have no one else capable of doing it. My G sedan is slammed and so was my previous car, so i know how to not jack up bumpers and skirts or scrape exhausts. Let me know.

Thanks

Another thing you can do is get a quality trickle charger to keep it charged. You may also want to think about having them put the car on jack stands. You don't want any flat spots on the tires in case they are underinflated. Just my .02

It would be a lot easier to just overinflate them to 50 psi. 50psi is not a problem as long at it's not driven.

Sorry to bring this old thread back but I have to come up with a different solution here my car is dead again. So Im going to have the battery pulled and put on a trickle charger, but my question is with the fuel stablizer do I have to start the car and get it through the system ? Well is harm any of the fuel components? When I get back to I have to run the thing dry to get it out of the system ?

Thanks Guys
