Default Coolant

I'm running low on coolant and my next dealer visit is not due until about 4-5k miles.
Since I can't get my hands on OEM Nissan coolant, what kind should I buy? Is Motul the way to go? And do local car stores carry it?

that would probably work just fine, but for as new as your car is your car shouldn't be low on coolant. I have an '03 with 53k that only need a drain refill once, and it was full when i drained it. Better check your radiotor hoses and core to make sure there are no leaks and your fans are spinning. Low coolant with 11k miles means something isn't right.

It's not on "low" on the canister, but the level is maybe, 2" higher than the "low" line.

Everything is operating fine and I've never seen a leak spot on anywhere where ever I've parked, except for a/c.

If it is above the low line, then you are fine i think... im pretty sure mine is only a few inches above the low line, and its ok. you just want to make sure that there is some coolant in the resivoir so that air isnt ingested when the system cools.

Coolant is not just coolant. Some brands should not be mixed or they will form a sludge and destroy your cooling system. You can't even mix green vw coolant from the early 90's with their modern pink coolant of today and thats from the same company. So deffinitely becareful when choosing a coolant, do your research.

If you want OEM Nissan coolant, try your local dealer. That's where i got mine.

We're not getting that technical. We're saying that coolant is coolant, like dirt from Texas is the same as dirt from Louisianna. Dirt is dirt...

+1

My three cars i owned, i used Toyota's pink coolant(told me to only use this in my car), Acuras green coolant, and now the nissan coolant. All of these can be bought at your local dealers for a bottle 12-14 bucks each. IT's not premixed so you have to do that yourself.

Oreilly's Auto Parts makes a formula that is compatible with all newer model vehicles also. Once the colors are mixed, it'll come out fuggly but will still be safe. It's also pre-mixed..

Yeah, Prestone 50/50 mix but make sure you don't use more than half the bottle for your car. It's suppose to be something you use to top off only.

O rly'? I just performed a radiator flush recently and completely filled my radiator with the Prestone 50/50. I'm gonna read the bottle tonight. Thanks for the heads up.

no problem. Best bet is to use the nissan coolant. Like someone said above, diff ones can mess up your cooling system.

That's a pretty stiff price though.

You got me there. I go all out on some things, then am extremely frugal on other... I'd actually need 2 bottles though. My car sucked down 1 bottle plus a hair of another. It's like filling your car with oil. It never takes even qts. It's always 5 1/8 or something similar, making us spring for that extra qt just to top it off.

BTW, I read the Prestone jug last night. I could find anything that dictated that is was for topping off only. Not to question your knowledge on the product, I'm gonna log onto their website and see if I can dig up a tech support # and give em' a call.

I just go by the Nissan repair manual. Like i said, not all coolant is the same. My integra, the radiator rusted with some coolant i bought at the local auto part store. I then bought the acura stuff, no more problems. It's better to be safe than sorry.

The prestone, i use for topping since it's diluted and can be mixed with different color anti freezes. There is a reason why there are different colors and some are to be used with the same colors.

You will only need one bottle from nissan since it's not diluted yet. You have to have mix it with distilled water. So you will basically have two bottles at the end.

I know waht you mean about frugal thing. I spend 2k on some used brakes but i won't buy new pack of socks because i think 8 bucks is expensive Modding is a money pit. I love it.

Just for $hits and grins I gave the Prestone tech support line a call. I got audix voicemail.
1.800.890.2075 opt. 4

I really didn't find anything on their website other than what the jug already states.
