Default Idle noise

I'm hearing a random clunk sound coming from the engine area. It does this maybe about every 3-5 seconds. Any Ideas on what this sound may be? I dont hear the noise when I am driving, only when I Im at Idle.

check to see if its your TOB (throw out bearing). I have a 06 and it did the same thing. Drove me nuts. Ended up the dealer changed my Transmission. Let us know if that's what it is.

It seems like no one ever tries to search for their problem before they create a thread anymore.

Why?

Ok, I'm bringing this thread back to life!!! I have the EXACT same noise! I mainly notice it when I pull in my garage after driving and warming up... Its a random CLUNK or KNOCK noise every few seconds.... Anyone have ANY what this could be?!?!? I'm thinking about going FI soon, but I don't want to if this is some kind of serious issue.....

well remember its a dual mass flywheel meaning that pieces shift at different times it can make noise but solid clutches make more noise.

Eek. That sucks. This is a noob question, but how serious is the throw out bearing? I mean, should I just replace the clutch if I'm gonna be replacing the throw out bearing?

throw out bearing is only about $30 but rule of thumb is if you pull the tranny to replace anything, if it's time or even close to time you change the entire clutch kit and flywheel.

Throw out bearings can makes noises from thumping to chattering to clanking sounds for thousands of miles before they actually need replacement. When your clutch pedal hits the floor and doesn't come back up it's time.... any noise or annoyance caused by the crappy OEM clutch set up should be ignored or accepted.

So just to update everyone, I installed a new Comp Clutch stage 2 clutch kit on my 05 Z today. And the CLUNKING sound is gone. It seemed as though the flywheel had a fair amount of play on it and was kinda beat up. I replaced the flywheel with another lightly used flywheel from an 04 Z, along with the new clutch and throw out bearing, and it's gone! The only thing I hear is a bit of chatter since I'm breaking in a new clutch. Haha!

i took my Z to the dealer regarding this. he said it happens because of something along the lines of it being a dual clutch. (like stated above earlier) i dont know if this is a normal thing or am i just being paranoid.

yep mine does it too, its normal for these cars. Nothing to be worried about, doesn't effect reliability in the least. These cars have carbon drive shafts, dual mass flywheels, many things you won't find in your regular old car, there is going to be differences, personally I'll take these differences if it means having to hear a faint noise at idle with the clutch out, the only time I can really hear it is sitting in a drive thru and have my window down while it bounces off the fast food building.

The dual mass flywheel's job is to reduce driveline noise compared to a solid mass flywheel and if it is not doing that then it's not normal. So if you're sure your flywheel is causing the noise then Nissan should come up with some fix either coming up with a new version of the flywheel or a fix of the existing one. Chances are the noise won't hurt anything but will be annoying.

Is that why flywheels for the Z are expensive? Because of the dual mass?
