Default how long should factory clutch last with stock config?

'03 Performance, moderately aggressive driving, 45k miles. Dealer said the clutch needed to be replaced ($2270!). 45k seems a bit early, even for non-grandma driving.

Any recommendations on brand replacement?

2270 for a clutch? all the components of the stock clutch can be purchased for like 300-500 bucks IIRC.

that is a hella lot of labor. unless that is in Pesos? did California switch yet?

Don't like Cali much, motormouth?!?!

I have the same issue dude, I feel your pain! I was told that my throwout bearing was going a little while back and that it is normal...but the noise getting really bad now! I started watching it adn noticed that it went away when I let off the clutch pedal in idle, so I described the issue to a mechanic buddy of mine and he told me that my clutch was going!

My question is the same as the OP's what is a good clutch to get...I have heard some good things about the JWT clutch kit but I don't know enough about clutches to make a decision!

I ilke exedy. and JWT is pretty tame.

if you want to know the cost of replacing your clutch, look to an online parts site and price it out. honestly, I kept a stock clutch when I had mine done, but I regret it now because they gave me the 'revised' 06+ clutch... which was soft as all hell compared to my awesome 03 exedy clutch disk. man I miss that clutch... like a dump truck. wonderful.

buddy of mine runs a dealership and said it's 11 hours worth of labor. Yikes.

Apparently the factory clutch runs $1500 just by itself. There's some other aftermarket clutch called "Jim Wolf" which is $1000 but not sure about quality.

why don't you learn to read: I just posted that I paid about 300 for MY replacement stock clutch... the ENTIRE assembly, not just friction disk.

your friend is either an idiot, liar or crook.

check this incredible search out... took me 1 minute to find a price online (and you can do it to!):

this is the JWT clutch kit:
L3503-NC000 NISSAN 350Z 2003-2006 VQ35DE Pressure Plate & Organic Disc: 1200kg $412.00

here are the stock parts:
30210-CD020 NISSAN 350Z 2003-2006 $140.07 (cover)
30100-CD020 NISSAN 350Z 2003-2006 $75.02 (disk)
30502-69F10 NISSAN 350Z 2003-2006 $28.22 (bearing)
30620-CD010 NISSAN 350Z 2003-2004 $28.95 (slave cyl)
30610-CD015 NISSAN 350Z 2003-2006 $53.95 (mast. cyl)

... total? about 330.00, right?

now if you are talking about clutch AND flywheel replacement... 1500 is still way overpriced for parts...

JWT flywheel:
L3503-NF000 NISSAN 350Z 2003-2006 VQ35DE Aluminum 14 lbs $395.00

combo price? 800.00

Stock flywheel:
2310-CD001 NISSAN 350Z 2003-2006 $897.54

combo price? 1200.00

so.. are you talking about replacing your clutch AND flywheel or what? and 11 hours of labor? ... I can find out if that is a joke as well, it sounds like it but I don't know off hand. nevertheless, JWT is a great company with quality parts you can go with that and be safe, but they only offer LIGHTWEIGHT flywheels and not stock type flywheels... please search before asking 'what a lightweight flywheel is' or 'will it make it harder to drive'...

That's fast as hell. It took me over 13 hours but that's me fooling around a lot and not trying to scratch up the paint underneath the car. It took me forever to clean out the inside tranny with all of that clutch dust. I think i can do it in 8 hours if i just concentrated but damn, 4-5 hours with breaks? I wonder how fast you can do it if you just went non stop at it.

Hm. Maybe i'll just order the parts myself and just pay for labor. Is it normal for a factory clutch to go at ~50k miles under very moderately aggressive driving?

I paid $800 for my JWT clutch/flywheel combo and had my local shop (Function:Tuned) install for $399.

I think total labor was 4-5 hours. 11 hours is absurd.

So did we decide just about how long the stock clutch should last for in miles approximate???

Be carefull about doing that. A lot of shops won't install parts that a customer carries in. I found this out with lowering springs. I did eventually find a place to do it though.

i've seen very competent people do it in 3hrs....

11hrs is outrageous. I thought Nissan quoted the job at around 6-7.
Threads like these make me glad i dont have to go to dealerships....

I really think that a clutch which is properly used and not tracked or taken to the strip can last over 100k miles. On the Z I'm not completely certain.

However it's not uncommon for clutches to last that long. It's all in the hands of the driver.
