Default Hot air/cold air but nothing in between

That's how I describe the heater in my Z. During the winter, I can't find a comfortable setting. When the "heat" **** is set all the way off, at 60 degrees, I get nothing but cold air. If I turn it up one notch, I get too much warm air.

Does anyone else have this problem and if so, how do I fix it??

Haven't noticed this so much with the heat, but my windsheild wipers have no variance in speeds. 1 click up is full speed 1 click down is as slow as they get. The other 3-4 clicks are useless....

My 2004 Z just started doing EXACTLY this as well. Anyone resolved this issue?

Thanks,

-Dave

Your blend doors might be messed up.

Behind the dash, I'd imagine on the passenger side.

Hmm... sorry about my ignorance, but what should I look out for?

Thanks,

pulled down the undercover underneath the steering wheel. to the bottom right is a connection that measures in-cabin temp. make sure it is plugged in.

Do you mean the cover surrounding the steering column (under the dash extending from the driver door to center console) and not the cover on the column itself?? If so, how does it come off? It's hard enough for me to wedge myself under there without knowing what I'm looking for.

Oh....and many thanks for giving me a place to start.

just put your hand in between the cover and the base of the steering wheel and pull down.

now...if your car was never worked on in that area, than there should be no reason the plug came off.

on the other hand, if you recently had work done around that area (alarm, car audio, etc), than that is most likely the case.

Tried that but it didn't budge. I'm afraid of pulling too hard and breaking something. Is this panel held in by snaps?

ding... ding... ding... We have a winner! That was it. I found the tiny plug not attached to anything and attached it to the right spot and all is good.

Thanks for your help on this!

I'm glad you got yours fixed! I hope my problem turns out to be the same. How did you remove the cover? Mine seems on pretty tight.

Actually, I didn't have to remove the cover at all. The wire was disconnected from the part (thermister?) right behind the little vent looking thing on the bottom part of the dash... pretty close to where your right knee goes.... but behind and underneath the dash.

I located the disconnected wire (tiny connector). Then I unscrewed the thermostat thingy from behind the dash... allowing me to plug that wire back into that. I then screwed it back into the dash and all is well.

Hope this helps... If not, I'll see about finding an image of what I am trying explain from memory. Thanks again drsifu!

Good luck Jcolman!

I'm having the same issue. It seemed to start after I installed my head unit. I'll have to go check that plug that you guys are referencing. Everything seems to be ok with my A/C Unit. All cables were plugged back in. The only thing I can think of is that when i pulled out the center console, the in cabin temp sensor cable got pulled out as well. It's nothing that I disconnected however.

Update: I took a look at the in-cabin sensor and everything looked alright. The harness was still connected. I just pushed on it to make sure it was seated correctly and I thought that I heard the faintest clicking noise. Anyways, when I fired up the A/C, I found that I'm no longer having any problems. It doesn't start putting out warm air until the dial is around 75 or so. The harness looked well seated but may be pushing on it reseated it. I broke a clip in the process :-(

I may have a connection problem as well. I poked around under the dash and I can't find any loose connectors or wires, but my heater will now run correctly sometimes. Other times it does it's usual too much hot air or cold air routine.

Jcolman, thanks for pointing this thread out to me and please do keep me posted on whether the sensor wire solves this issue for you as well.

daverx7 and maximapowr, it seems you two had the same problem I described in the thread, "Does your A/C need to be on 60 in order to get cold air?" -- if this is the case, can you please do me a favor and post as such in that thread? I would like to forward that thread to the Nissan reps who have insisted to me that my needing to keep my thermostat set to 60 is "normal" operation. I am encouraged by how simple your fix seems though, and will have my dealer perform this sensor wire reattachment. (I am unfortunately too naive in regards to cars to be able to do this myself, and mine is still under warranty.)

Many thanks,
Josh
