Default Airbag off?

How come sometimes the airbag sign near the rearview mirror will light up and say it's off? Is there any way I can turn it back on? I have a 07 base and I'm pretty sure it comes with driver and passenger airbag...

Thanks.

The airbag will be off if the car detects that the passenger seat is empty, or if you've just got a bag of groceries there. Or if you've got a kid there.

I had a passenger there in the passenger seat.

Then either a) your passenger was very light, or b) your passenger was sitting very strangely (legs crossed at the knees, and weight shifted to one cheek), or c) your airbag system is malfunctioning.

I know about b) because I had a +/-110lb passenger sitting as described, and the airbag light said "airbag off" or whatever it says. When she sat "normally," it was ok again. The passenger seat not only has a weight sensor but a pattern sensor.
