Does everyone else have a "rough" 1st-to-2nd gear shift
...is it just me, or does the 1st-to-2nd gear shift feel pretty rough when doing a fast shift (ie. racing). I know the 350z is suppossed to have "tight shifter gates" when shifting, but there just seems to be a lot of resistance whenever I do a really quick 1st-to-2nd shift. Oh, and yes I am sure the clutch is in all the way in. It just seems that a slow "two-stage" pull of the shifter from 1st-to-2nd goes in fine (meaning 1st-to-neutral, neutral-to-2nd), but when I try to just drive the shifter in one quick pull, the shifter gets held up for a little bit before it will "reluctantly" slide in. Is this just normal resistance from the "tight gates". Any feedback would be appreciated....
I noticed this happened to my G at the drag strip. When I would shift hard from first to second, it would grind but still go into gear. I am going to mention that when I go back to the dealer to get a few things fixed or looked at.
...sometimes it feels like theres something blocking 2nd gear, my problem is that this is my first stickshift car, and I don't know what's considered normal and what's not
p.s. when I push in the clutch, and shift into first, it takes some effort (not a lot), but if I take it back out of first (still holding the clutch down) and put it back into first, it sort of "pops" in there with VERY little effort, almost like something pulled it in....shouldn't it "pop" in by itself all the time?

If you're getting gear grinds, you're not shifting correctly. I've never ground a gear or missed a shift with the Z. It has an outstanding gear box. And I do a lot of near redline quick upshifts as well as downshifts. The key to smooth shifting is rev matching. You properly match revs and this gearbox is smooth as silk. 'Course I've driven high performance MTs for over 40 years...
I have the same problem here too... it's quite rev dependent.
Sometimes I get a perfect engagement, and other times it's
a pain. I end up going into 2nd slower so that it can
engage correctly. It grinded a couple times esp. when I can't
get to 2nd gear fully.
I took it out to track a few weeks ago and had trouble with
2nd gear. It kept locking me out after 1st gear. I ended up
bouncing the rev limiter because of the delay getting into
gear. After a few attempt I finally got in and continued to
4th gear. It was pretty bad with 16.6sec quartermile.
A couple times I didn't have as much trouble and managed
to get into the 15s.

In the thread above this one entitled "Poll: how does your Z shift ?"...

" I've got 3500 miles on mine and it shifts great, no vibrations. The clutch has broken in and is not as abrupt, but not much change in the shift action. The 1-2 shift is a little tougher and I assumed it was the result of the double synchro, I can actually feel the shifter slide sort of around a lump before it is back into 2nd. This does slow down the 1-2 shift. From 2nd to 6th all "very free and easy. " Like............. Wooden Ships. "
Question....
Does anybody else experience this "lump" (halfway between 1st and 2nd -- instead of going straight --- it seems like the shifter is riding around something on the left side) ??
I have the same situation... no grinding -- just the "lump".
Thanks.

Zrated...
Then... from 1 to 2... it's straight back......just like from 3 to 4.. -- straight... no hinderance whatsoever ?
Thanks for your input... I need your / any input asap. My Z is going into Nissan tomorrow for its scheduled 2,300 mile checkup...and this "lump" is really getting on my nerves,

When the car is sitting for 4 hours or more, or first thing in the morning it is very difficult to get from 1st to 2nd. And if you do, it just about grind everytime. After about half and hour everything is all good!!
I too have the lump feeling. 3rd to 4th is definately straight back, but 1st to 2nd it down and around a bump, and then in. It's the wierdest thing. I am thinking about saying something to the dealer soon...

LOL... Good shifting is an art form. For any shift regardless of how fast, the shifter moves in a three-step process. Out of gear - pause/rev match - into gear. If you try to slam it into gear with brute force, you will encounter resistance and it will be susceptible to grind because you're forcing it. Again, if you learn to rev match properly, you can shift very quickly with no resistance and no grind. If you try learning to double clutch, you will eventually learn how to shift. I learned to drive with no synchros, and most MT race cars don't have synchros either -- you have to double clutch. Contrary to the myth some fool put out here once, you can double clutch a synchro gearbox without hurting it, in fact, judging by all the difficulty folks are having around here with shifting, it just might save your gearbox from abuse.
