Default Tire Pressure Loss -- Need Help!

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed that my rear right tire is losing pressure at the rate of about 1-2 psi per week compared to the other three tires, which are holding steady. I confirmed this using a handheld pressure meter in addition to the built-in tire pressure monitor. (In case anyone's wondering, I measured the pressure both cold and after driving straight on an even road--the pressure difference is real and can be consistently reproduced.)

I looked over the tire, but couldn't find anything that could account for this (like a nail, etc.), so I am suspecting the valve stem.

The car is a 6MT Touring with stock 18"s.

Two questions:

(1) Has anyone else experienced any tire pressure variance/loss, and if so, how much is normal?

(2) Has anyone had to replace the valve stem in any of their tires, and if so, did that screw up the tire pressure monitoring system?

On an unrelated note, I was planning on buying new tires soon--do any of you have any recommendations (brand/size/etc.)?

Thanks a lot,

Bode

Check your valve cap, and make sure it is not on to tight. There is a little piece of rubber at the end of these caps that can some times push up against the valve pin and cause a slow leak.

for tires, I went with Toyo TS-1 tires. I put 245/40/18F and 275/40/18 on the rears. I also got the Nismo alloy wheels, wich are a little larger than stock. The 245/275 combo is recommended for the NIsmo Wheels and the S-tune suspension set up, so I went with these sizes.

I've been expeirencing leaking to my right rear tire as well. But the leak does not seem to occur gradually, its more like one day it is fine the next I'm down 5 psi's I thought I might have a nail or something, but, it doesn't account for the sudden overnight drop in pressure. I was going to have it checked at discount tire, but will keep a more scientific log and analysis regarding what is occuring since coming accross your thread. I'll keep you posted.

gidrow,

This probably won't help you, but my pressure loss turned out to be caused by a nail in the end. Well, more like a needle than a nail--I've never seen such a thin nail before! No wonder it took me weeks to finally find it.

I took the car to Wheel Works, where they managed to plug the leak. The pressure now holds steady in all four tires. Yay!

Good luck,

Bode
