Default Shifter problem

Well, after about 18 months of downtime on my g35 getting the built motor put in and rps clutch and flywheel (don't ask - long, painful story), I have my car and I've repaired most of what the shop did wrong. One of the last things left is:

Normally, as you know, you push the shifter toward the floor and where 6th gear is to engage reverse. In my car, you cannot push it down. I engage reverse the same way you do in a corvette. All the way right and then down NEXT to 6th and not UNDER 6th. I'm not a mechanic of any sort so if you can help me at all please let me know in great detail. ALSO, my reverse lights don't come on-hoping its a closely related problem. PLEASE help.
