Default Terrible Screetching Noise from the Engine.. Embarrasing!

Looked up a few posts about this but want to make this official.... Happens sometimes, like 3 times a week now. whenever i start my car it starts screetching so loud that the car sounds like a piece of SH*T!

Are my Belts Loose? A few posts said this but how do i tell if they are loose? I just had the serpentine (spelling?) belt replaced but not the other one.

I dont know how to fix this noise, what is it, i dont even know if it is the belts, but the noise sounds like an old car that is crying for help! it just gets soo loud thats its unbearable and then it just disappears after 30 secs!

If anyone can help me out that would be great, i dont want to take it to the stealership and tell them all this and watch that it starts up fine.

2003 touring with 80,000 miles on her!

I'm going to venture to say it's a Squealing Serpentine Belt.

Change it.

Belts can squeak if they're too loose, too tight, worn or even if it's cold and damp. With 80k, I'd have to agree that the serpentine is probably toast. Any decent mechanic can look at the belt and tell that it's worn. It doesn't matter if it squeaks or not.

Doh! Guess I need to read a little better. Sounds like you're right on the money. He didn't tighten properly.

for a quick fix, take a bar of soap and hold against the underside of the belt while the engine is running for a few seconds, takes away the noise, but it's just a temporary fix.

Check belts (tension as well) then replace if needed.

End.

To check the belt tension, just simply take the belt and twist it. it should only turn about 90 degrees. If you can flip the belt upside down, then its too loose.

Interesting. I've been wondering about that since I replaced my belts and wasn't very familiar with belt tension guages (ie.. which one to get and how to read it).

Sometimes as the starter starts to die off there could be a horrible screech too. It happened with several s14's that I owned.
