it was the 06 rev up. does that count?

Yes. I was just saying that the older non-revup which is a very similar motor to your 06 revup did not have the ability to adjust exhaust cam timing, therefore I can't see the bad sensor causing too much of an issue. However, you would have to find out if that code is being thrown b/c of that sensor being bad or b/c some other sensor(s) or something else is causing the code.

I hate to revive a very old thread but pretty much ran into the same issue as OP and am at the exact same point that the thread is at now. I can't seem ot think that this si an issue that would cost $550 to fix and am lookin for options. Any ideas?

Situation:

06 Manual, Service Engine Soon light is on, just taken from the dealers, same code. EVT is malfunctioning. Revs at about 1100 RPMS at idle. Slight chatter when clutch is fully depressed.

From the '07 service manual section EC:

P1084 EVT CONTROL POSITION SENSOR

Exhaust valve timing control
position sensor circuit

An excessively high or low voltage from the
sensor is sent to ECM.

I got this code after a wot run from a light. Read, cleared no issues. I drove over 1000 miles and today it came back. The only issue was yesterday after a 300 mile trip when I came off the freeway my idle was at 11-1200. Today it was fine until the light came on.

I am pretty close to doing an engine swap so I'll replace the sensor then.

Went to Nissan yesterday to get the sensor I thought was 133.00. They were giving me the solenoid on top of the bank. I showed them the sensor on the front of the engine, under the cam sprocket cover and they looked & looked and could not find it. We went through the usual HR/DE discussion. I said it is an 06 REVUP..

Finally a guy in the background said I vaguely recall on an Infinity I found it under the cover and sure enough that is where it was to get the sensor you have to buy the cover, sprocket and it is over 500 freaking bucks!

The car runs fine, only when the code happens it idles funny.

I am looking for either a used known good assembly or a way to do it without the whole cover/sprocket.

Were you able to get this resolved? Interested in the outcome?

I do not understand why the cover and sprocket cost so much? Labor intensive?

I bought that. It appears the reason the cover is necessary is the ring is wired through it.

I won't know it solves the code until my build is done.

Going to go get my codes scanned tomorrow.

I had to get my smog done and couldn't get all my systems ready between clearing the cel from this so I installed the replacement. It stayed off long enough to pass smog & today came back.

Anyone have any other solutions to this?

I have the same problem. In my 06 Z when i erase the code comes right back on. My teacher told me that it might be ether a broken wire or the sensor is fried. I will post later today the result of the diagnostic

PS sorry for opening an old post again

P1084 exhaust valve timing control position sensor detects the concave groove of the exhaust camshaft rear end. This sensor signal is used for sensing a position of the exhaust camshaft. This sensor uses a hall IC. Based on the position of the exhaust camshaft, ECM controls exhaust valve timing control magnet retarder to optimize the shut/ open timing of exhaust valve for the driving condition.

You can visually check the sensor for chipping.

For my car the issue resolved magically on it's own. Sorry I can't give better data.

Sometimes just unplugging the sensor, wiping it and reinstalling it does the trick. I was getting a code on my civic for the vtec solenoid which is a sensor on the back of the block. Took it off and cleaned it and reinstalled and never threw a CEL again.

Hi everyone,
Im new to the forum and also a new 2006 350Z owner. Love the car. It runs great and I can't tell there is any problems with it jst the code. I have had the car a week and noticed the service engine soon light came on. I had it checked and it is the P1084 error code. P1084 EVT CONTROL POSITION SENSOR; Exhaust valve timing control; position sensor circuit. I have read the posts here on this issue and I'm surprised you have to buy a cover and sprocket just to replace a sensor. Am I reading this right? Is it necessary to replace the cover and sprocket to replace the sensor?

Thanks,

BeastiZ

Unfortunately I'm having a similar problem. Other bank is all p1078 bank 1 evt code on a revup 05 g35. I'm making the mechanic check the signals to see if any are bad. The bozo did absolutely nothing except wanted to clear the code and see if it came back, wtf!?! I coulda done that.

Will update if I have a solution

any updates on this. I got the stupid P1084 code after I changed spark plugs and cleaned my Throttlebody. Its freaking irritating. I replaced the EVT sensor for Bank 2. It work nice for about 15 miles and a hard run... Then bam stupid idle went up to 1000-1100 rpms and around 3000 rpms the car runs like dog ****. SES light came back on with same code.

I'm gonna tear the car apart this weekend to see if something is gunked up on the cam or near the cam sensor. This is pretty ****ing retarded. Does anyone know of a work around for this with something like Osiris Uprev or other piggy back for the ecu.
