Default Fuel tank won't accept more!

for the last year, i've been filling up 1/4 of the tank only, cuz i rarely drive the car.. and now whenever i try to fully fill it up, it won't accept that.!

it reaches about 1/2 the tank and the filler triggers that the tank is full. at first i thought it was the station i used had some problem. but now it's obviously something to do with my car.

any idea how to get this to work properly?

thnx

I've had the same issue for the last 5 months. I try to fill her up but the trigger stops too early and it tells me it's full. I get into the car and start her up and it tells me that it's missing 1/4. Haven't found a resolution but I'm hoping someone will chime in and give us an answer.

Read an article where they said that it has to do with vapors inside the gas tank (i.e. heat creates fuel vapors that "fool" the automatic fill up mechanism---the anti-spill thingy, triggering it). Try filling up early in the morning; it's worked for me.

^^ It's not free anymore. They only keep TSB's (which is what it was) free for so long then you have to pay to have it done. My friends 350z is doing the same thing and they want to charge him to fix it now. His is a 04.

i read a similar post the other day and never had the issue until the day after! it was like a curse lol...anyways after figuring out why this coincidence happened, i realized i only go to Shell to get gas, that day i went to chevron and it happened, i guess shell has some special fuel pump or something, so try going to shell's, i went to a shell after the incident happened and had no problem

Works everytime. Avoid letting the gas get low. Thats when the problems start.

Turning it upside down won't cause it to spill out?

I have the opposite problem. So far 2 times I tried to fill up the car and the pump never clicks off when it gets full, and spews gas all over my car. Anyone know what causes that? I'm hoping I just oddly used 2 faulty pumps, but curious to see if that happened to anyone else. Its a great feeling when you get a brand new rear bumper painted and then gets covered in gasoline a week later...

I have both problems at once... At first it clicked off too early a few times, so I repositioned the pump. Then it over filled and ran down the side of my car.

wow. is this thread still going?

ok. being kind here. to all of you n00bs who fail at searching or checking with the dealer - there's a fuel filler neck recall for the 350Z that's been out for, oh, 4 years now. go to you local nissan dealer and have it performed.

*insert facepalm here*

buy the parts for the recall. have it installed by any dealer or do it yourself... it's fairly straight forward and if IIRC, it's only three parts.

the "turn the pump upside down" was meant to be a joke. as A) you can't turn the pump upside down...the nozzle, yes, but not the pump... and B) the problem is created by vapor not being able to leave the tank which causes it to either overflow or disable the nozzle due to the back pressure...

...weird...I get it every now & then, when I can't fill 'er up early in the AM. I've kinda gotten used to it; if I can fill 'er up, fine, if not, I get three quarters of a tank or so. The gas station's on the way home, so I don't mind stoppin' once a week there, just to make sure I got enough fuel in the tank. I STILL love my Zed!!!
