Question Clunk at Start up ?

Is anyone else getting a "clunk" at start up? It only happens when I first start my car in the morning. Turn the ignition and as soon as the engine fires there is a "clunk". Anyone know what this is? Is it normal?

I have it too, a series of 3-4, sometime 5-6 quick clunks on inital cold startup. I can easily hear it in the garage but sometimes its harder to hear when I start it outside...

I WONDER WHAT IT IS ? I fear that the dealer will not be able to replicate it if I drop it off for service...so I haven't bothered.

I alos hear it once in a while only when starting in the morning. It has not happened lately. Reading the manual yesterday, it said somehwere about self-test of something (ABS?) which can cause clunking noise at startup.

I too have this loud clunk only on startup after car has been sitting for a while.

Curious to know if there is a problem somewhere or is this just a normal Z sound?

Anybody out there know?? -Ricky-

Me too. Only occurs in the morning or when cold starting. I'm glad someone else brought this up...

I've noticed it three time so far.....only on cold start after sitting for a bit. What I heard sounds like a series of 3 maybe 4 rapid sounds in succesion (could almost be mistaken for one "clunk") sort of a rapid "clun-clun-clunk"

Kinda reminds of the audible lifter tick on cold starts I've heard in some older cars.....that instant before the oil presure comes up and coats. Except this sound is more solid and "heavier" than the tinny sound of lifters tapping.

If that makes any sense

Makes sense to me. Thing is it will maybe only happen 1 out of every 5 or 10 cold starts. Not very repeatable...

V, The ABS testing is normal when the car first starts to move but the clunk I'm hearing is right when the car is first started so I don't think it's related to the ABS (or is it )?
At least there is comfort in numbers. I thought I was the only one with this problem.

All of this sounds exactly like mine...

Sometimes its 5-6 clunks in a row (very quick, about 0.1 sec each in succession). Sometimes its only 3 or 4. It always occurs on a cold start, and has never happened on 2 consecutive days. It seems very unrepeatable, but I do know it is coming from the front half, and toward the passengers side, and sounds to be from the engine compartment. I wish the dealer could hear it, as I am worried about it, but its pointless to drive over there to show them a sound that cannot be repeated...I hope this is nothing major.
