Default Rear Rattle ??

Does anyone els have a loud rattle in the rear? It sounds like the trunk is not closed all the way. I tried the 3rd brake light the strut brace and the usual spots but cant fix it. Only thing I can get to make the noise is the Shocks for the hatch. I have taken it to 3 dealers and have got 3 different stories of what it is. ALL of them put the blame on the fact that I have aftermarket parts on the car. Fing Idiots....

Is the rattle like a metalic twang. it might be the steel bracket towards the back. If the bolt is loose on it they vibrate. you can check by pulling up the rear panel. or if your hands are small enough you can reach under and feel it.
If you take the panel off, just unplug the trunk lamp (grip it on the left and pull) Use a flat head screwdriver and pop the two plugs (the ones with the ring on them)
Pull up the weather stripping and take out the false floor.
Grip the bottom of the panel and pull up (be carefull, the side are connected to the other panel.) There are Four clips on the top of the panel and one on each side connecting it to the next panel.

Once thats off, you'll see two metal brackets. check to see if they're loose. Then put everything back together.

Don't know if we are thinkning about the same thing, but I may have a simple fix for you. I know I thought I had a rattle that sounded like the trunk lid being not latched... finally figured out that mine was the passenger seatbelt. Try slidding the passenger belt into the little plastic clips on the side when you are alone. Just might be the cheapest rattle fix ever.

Not sure if my rattle equates to yours, but I found mine to be in the clips securing the panel on the hatchback.

Dealer replaced all the clips and rattle went away!

My rattling sounds like metal on metal, but I have no clue where it's coming from. I took off the Injen heat shield and filed off some of it because it was touching a metal pipe but it didn't fix it.

Mines not loud either it just sounds metalic, and heavy, like two thick pipes banging together, maybe twice a second? and small taps, it doesn't sound like there is much force behind it... It's only when I'm going over a bumpy road. Or more frequently, every time I drive down my steep driveway.

I found the problem. I have HKS coilovers and the top of the strut mount was loose. It connects up to the inside of the body and cannot be accessed from the inside of the car. I had to tear the car apart before I found the problem. It was a very slight rattle but it carried up thru the rear tower and that made it sound like it was comming from inside the car. I tightend it up and now its all better.

If any part of that strut assembly is loose it will make a metal sounding rattle that will sound like its comming from inside the car. I could not belive such a small rattle was making as much noise as it did.

Could this be a problem with the stock suspension too?? What tools do I need to tighten it?

Default Found problem

It was my Injen CAI that was making the noise. The metal part that has the filter attached to it was striking the metal bumper. There was a little play where the filter assembly attaches to the bumper.

for the rattle in the rear right, have you guys check to see if all your jack tools are strap down tight. They could be loose and hitting on each other.

I have this same rattle in the right rear. I don't have any aftermarket back there. Has anyone with stock figured out exactly what this is? I can't believe we are all experiencing different rattles coming from the right rear.

weird thing is that my rattle has come and gone on its own. seemed to have been road related and only on severly choppy roads. it was definately a metallic sound, tough to descride, but if you have heard it you know what i am talking about. one of two things i have heard as a good explanation was either the jack tools, mine were alright, or possible a bracket or something in the actual taillight fixture. i am in need of an oil change in the next month so i am going to track this and bring it up then.

I think it might be your jack in the car. My jack was loose and everytime i was going over a bump or brake it would clunk.

I have been dealing with this problem since I got my Z on 10-02 and have complained plenty of times, but have had bigger Z problems to deal with. I have that metallic sound from the right side of the inside of the strut tower brace like morese code its like ****en japanese water torture. All that they (dealer) has done is marr my panels when they start using that pick type pry tool. One time they ordered the shock strut assembly, but I was busy and slowed down from going to the dealer and parts were sent back. Two weeks ago I met some Tech from Nissan who goes around So. Cal by the name of Angel and trys to solve problems regular techs at dealers can fix, he acknowledged the clicking sound and said he was going to write up something to let the Nissan Engineers know and that they would get back to me.
FYI I am a pre order 03 enthus. is this happening on the 04s? I love my Z ,but it has a lot of problems so far I've had the window streaks, skins on seats replaced coming undone, belts coming undone, brakes worn out prematurely changed at 10k, axle splines had to be relubed were dry, valve cover gasket leak, shorted throttle body, feathering cupping pulling to right problem front tires replaced and a lower control arm put in., rattles and vibrations on A pillar and dash, window goes up and them down about 5", key fob trunk release not fully opening hatch, sqeal when shifting at 4k, and the incompetent lazy Nissan tech who always no matter how many times I address to be careful with her mar and scratch plastic panels, break clips, leave dirty greasy fingerprints on headliner, scrtached rims when replaced tires i have a fat stack of work orders from different dealers. I know I'm not the only one I see other people with the same problems as me. I have filed a case with NNA and was considering to just get a 04 with no miles instead of getting all my money back, but have seen that the front suspension problem has not been addressed for 04. I am very sad that Nissan has let us hard core enthusiasts It would'nt bother me so much but my Z sucks and so does the service. I am even afraid to drive her because I don't want for something else to break of **** up. Anyways good luck to all Zers.
