Default Threw codes P0011 and P0021, looking for advice

Hey all,

I posted this up on Driver and got no responses and my350 seems to be a little more technical so I thought you all might have some advice for me. My car is an 05 G35 5AT with the DE engine I replaced my cam covers with polished pieces and all seemed to go well. The next morning SES lit up and I pulled 2 codes; P0011 and P0021-The comprehensive component monitor, referred to as the CCM, monitors the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) position for over-advanced cam timing. If the cam timing exceeds a maximum calibrated limit or is stuck in an advanced position, the check engine light will come on and set this trouble code.

Possible causes include; Incorrect camshaft timing
VCT solenoid valve stuck open or continuous oil flow to piston chamber
Camshaft advance mechanism binding, or faulty VCT unit. These codes usually result in rough idle, stall or hard start. I have none of these symptoms. The car runs great. I cleared the codes and drove around with no light, then the next day it's back.

Any ideas on what I could have messed up to throw these codes? The install is a pretty simple process so I'm at a loss on what could have happened.

TIA for your help. Here's a pic of the problem area:

Woot, another ATX car. When you replaced the cover did you make sure to put the grounding wire back? that causes some weird troubles sometimes.

I have a modified grounding kit that doesn't have any wires in front of the timing chain cover. Good idea though.

If you're in Austin you should check out centexvq.com. We have a great G/Z community here.

wow. Didn't even know there was a community here. I'm down south by Barton Creek.

Just real basic, but have you tried just unplugging and replugging the soleniod plug?

I haven't tried that but will in the morning. I cleared the codes again today and will see if they come back tomorrow. Thanks for the help. Centex has a small meet every Friday night at 6:30 somewhere usually north. We'd love to have you join us sometime. Check the website and look for Comida and Cars in the Events forum.

Will do. I think I might have identified the issue. The stem at the back of the big round part has seal rings on it and I didn't check the polished covers to see if they were there. Going to the dealer this morning to pick up a couple and see if that's the issue.

Replaced the seal rings yesterday and drove ~ 80 miles with no SES. Keeping fingers crossed the issue is fixed.

I have the same P0011 and P0021 codes on my 03 Z. I am in the process of searching for answers and stopped by here on my travels. What/where are these seal rings you speak of?

I haven't solved my problem yet. My engine is completely stock except for a "pop-charger". I have changed out both cam position sensors, both vct solenoids, and this weekend I put in new spark plugs and I threw a new crank position sensor in. Cleared codes and they still came back. I am leaning towards a bad timing chain and/or timing chain tensioner... Old thread may be old but it might help some people out with an issue they have.

Hey Guys
Don't mean to hijack the thread but I am getting the same error codes, I am really not a hands on person and since this is my daily driver i can't really try to mess with it myself and risk having no car for commuting. Give this, i took it to the dealer, they told me the codes had to do with oil pressure but they checked that and it was fine. They cleared the code and asked me to go back if it came on again.
This morning the light came on again, i can only assume its the same code(s). The car drives great, other than the CEL you'd be hard pressed to find anything wrong with it.
I did have the oil changed recently (about 3 weeks ago, CEL first came on last week), could this have anything to do with it?
The car is completely stock and nothing has been done to it lately other than the oil change 3 weeks ago before this started.
Oils pressure at idle is low but then again its always been on the low side so I can't say there's much difference.
Thanks for any help!

Have you checked your oil level? What oil are you using?

Low oil pressure at idle can result in some expensive repairs. Your main bearings may be worn
