i just got an oil change on my 06 Z. Iv noticed the oil pressure guage reads close to 120psi when im driving. at idle its fine but when i take off from a red light, its starts creaping up to the 120psi mark. I know this isnt normal cause usually it stays around the 60psi mark.

any one know whats wrong?

 

What viscosity did you put in? The thicker the viscosity, the harder it is to pump = higher pressure

 

Its conventional Mobile 1 oil. Is that the problem? Should I get another oil change with a different viscosity?

I'v been babying the car up to about 2500-3000k shifts and it sucks.

 

I don't think it's the brand, but rather the viscosity.

 

am i gonna break anything is the oil pressure is up that high?

 

Most likely no, just more engine wear as during startup/warmup as it takes longer for your oil to get to the top end/cams.

Poorer fuel economy.

 

so you recommend Synthetic oil?

 

most definitely. Mobil 1 is popular, so is Amsoil. I use Redline because it's ester synthetic..so the oil is polar and cling to engine parts better.

P.S..Ignore the oil threads where people say "I used X brand and it works great". Of course it works 'great' otherwise they would have spun a bearing. You can't really 'feel' if it works great or not. Do your research on the basestock they use, then decide.

its a coincidence....its ur oil pressure sending unit that went bad..cheap and easy fix..do it yourself

 

dont keep driving the car till u fix it, that is not good to keep driving with oil psi that high

 

some of the comments blow my mind...yeah the oil is causing this...get real people..dont spread false info to other people keep it to yourself..

I assume since you said "I just got an oil change" you didn't do it yourself, correct? So you may not be 100% sure of the type and viscosity of oil that went in. That being said, whoever did it would have had to screw up big time to put a viscosity so far off from normal as to double your oil pressure.

I'm guessing it's a defective oil filter. What brand of filter was used?

I just changed to Mobil 5W-30 full synthetic and my oil pressure is a little past the 30 psi needle after driving for 10 minutes. Then after 20 mins (after everything warms up), it idles exactly at 30 psi. However, when I drive above 3k, the needle goes up to like 90 psi, then when around 4k and above, it is almost hitting 120 psi but never exactly on it.... It just stops there..

 

u need to search man..this topic has been discussed so many times..search oil pressure sending unit or oil pressure sensor...it is a very easy fix..get under the car it is what is screwed into the motor under the oil filter...just unplug the connector and remove the unit screwed in and screw in the new one and clip the connector in and good to go..i know there are diagrams on this site all over showing where it is located and all..
