Default Help? Clutch issues

Hello fellow 350z enthusiasts,

I have an issue with a 350z that I was hoping someone could provide some feedback regarding. I am not an expert on 350zs or cars for that matter and would really appreciate knowledgeable advice.

Three weeks ago I purchased a used 2005 350z from a used car dealer with 52k miles on it. The car drove fine when I had it and seemed to have no major issues other than a few cosmetic scratches here and there. A few days ago, about 1000 miles later, I have started to have issues with it.
Starting a week ago, the clutch started giving me some minor issues that I didn’t think anything of at the time. It wouldn’t ‘catch’ and go into gear right away and would spin for a second or two then go into gear and go fine. Yesterday, while driving it became a bigger problem. Now it seems like it never catches gear and when I would ‘gas it’ I couldn’t feel the car move with the acceleration. The car would still ‘go’ but I would be in 2nd or 3rd going 20mph and at 5 or 6 rpms. A very strong rubbery burning smell coming from hood (what I imagine the clutch)

I had a mechanic friend of mine drive it a bit (but he works on VW’s) and he said it feels like the clutch is gone and needs to be replaced. He said that flywheel also needs to be replaced (which I don’t really understand). He gave me an estimate of $1,100 for parts and $400 for labor. Another friend (that’s not a mechanic but another 350z driver) said it was too much and I could get it for $500-700 parts and $100-200 labor.

Can someone please advise me on this? What’s actually going on, what I need to have done, what parts? I heard this was the place to get quality advice regarding 350zs and hoping someone can help me

-Thanks!

explains the basic mechanics of the clutch/flywheel rather well

id agree with your buddies, clutch and maybe flywheel. sounds like some bad slippage
did you take the z up a hill when you were testing it? unless your technique is really bad i wouldnt think it could go from normal->bad operation over 1k

Welcome. Sounds like typical slipping clutch.

There are plenty of clutch-flywheel combinations that will suit your needs. Read and study here.

Hey I'm also having a clutch issue. After driving normal for a few minutes I smell my clutch burning I'm guessing Its slipping But I really can't feel it. Also its been very cold lately around 20-35 degrees I don't know if that makes a difference. Lastly I hear this screaching noise while my car is moving in gear it goes away after the car warms up

The smell is the clutch friction material against the flywheel. This is not right. Soon you will have other clutch related problems.
