All you need is valve cover gaskets, that's it.

If you find oil in the spark plug tube/on the plug its coming from the valve cover itself. In these cases valve cover generally needs to be replaced or a sealant used to correct the problem. Considering the valve covers are $200+ new each, the sealant doesn't seems like a bad idea. In the later HR's I believe (don't quote me on this one) they actually changed the valve cover to accept new gaskets around the spark plug tube.

Sealant didn't work for me. It's the right side and there seems to be something wrong with the PCV outlet as well. I sometimes go through oil quick and after reading this

http://www.netcrafting.com/car_mx/pathfinder/oil.html

I figured it was time. Valve cover+gasket+2 coil protectors+pcv=250ish from http://courtesyparts.com/ or mynismo.com (higher shipping). I'ts nice that you can order the ignition coil springs+protectors seperate from the coil but doesn't make up for the crappy valve cover design.

Did you read Zazz93's post? You really better hope DavidV doesn't read this thread.

The courtesy guy is right; the spark plug tube seals are NOT replaceable; you can either replace the whole valve cover or try to seal the tube with RTV.

I tried RTV about a year ago and I checked last month and found oil again. There appears to a design flaw in the right side valve cover design that screws with proper PCV function, that contributes to oil consumption/contamination and premature tube seal failure.

If you really want just the gasket the link is

Yeah, the RTV sealant has worked for me. Actually I don't think I put a new coat on it the last two time I pulled it off and its stayed sealed (granted I used a good amount on the tubes that acts as a pre-seal to the valve covers actual seals). Give it a try, its a little messy but get it on thick and be careful when putting the valve cover gasket on. They tend to loosen up and fall out of the valve cover's groove and then they cut and leak oil on to a hot exhaust manifold (causing an engine fire on headers). My suggestion is to use a little glue to hold the gasket in place to bolt it down. The glue doesn't like heat and oil so it will not be permanant.

I just changed my plugs today and I found out that I have the same problem (oil on spark plugs) @ 68k. I'm still not clear as to whether change the whole valve cover or just the valve cover gaskets. I'm not sure if I want to go with the sealant method, since there is a high probability that the problem will arise again in he near future.

valve covers bro. after much research and questioning everywhere, i found thet the vote is unanimous lol. everyone said valve covers. about 200 each plus labor! sealant? forget about it. the valve cover gasket dont have the seals piece that we need unlike many other cars have it included. i called courtesy and they said the same thing!!!! i wouldnt panic too quickly as long as u get it done when u can then u should be fine. im at 104,000 miles when i discovered it lol

Its simple, but at the same time very easy to make a mistake. Unfortunately, you can't verify until the car is running and leaking oil.

I can't find a DIY anywhere except for the guy that changed them on his SUV (same motor).

*EDIT: found one

I know this thread is old but was curious if anyone knew. To seal it on the passenger side using RTV would you still have to remove the valve covers??
thanks

Yes they have to be removed, not really a big deal. I noticed mine leaking during my 60k plug change, still leaking at the 120k plug change and i'll bet they are still leaking today.

When I put my CF valve covers on I used RTV sealant + valve covers and I have not had a single issue...

I have my stock valve covers and gaskets if anyone needs them.

What's the condition on your stock valve covers? How many miles? Was the engine FI? How much? Thanks

Could this cause oil burning in the cylinder and the engine to smoke?

Not what these people are talking about. The oil is on the outside of the plug, not the part inside the combustion chamber.
