Default Rear Wheel Bearing (Tip)

If you have a Haynes or Chilton manual you will be get the job done but it is a pain. I have replaced the rear wheel bearing twice and I have found that removing the half axle will save you time and aggravation. I don't have all the fancy tools and this made life a ton easier. When I searched for instruction on how to do the wheel bearing I only found instructions on how to do the front where you don't have an axle blocking your access to the 4 bolts.

BEFORE YOU START: Make sure you have access to a Machine Press and a Rear Wheel Bearing Puller (available at Autozone to borrow) Without the MP you will NOT be able to finish the job. If you need assistance while doing this you can reach out to me.

Here is how to DIY:

-Remove wheel
-Remove brake caliper and secure it so it's not hanging by the brake line.
-Remove the rotor
-Remove the 6 bolts connecting the half axle to the rear diff (pumpkin)
-Take the big bolt off which holds the axle in the wheel hub assembly
-Using a rear wheel bearing puller to push the axle out of the assembly
-Now take the 4 bolts out which hold the assembly in. (Be careful as this is heavy and once all the bolts are out it could fall)
-Take the bearing off (I used a machine press to pull it off and you need to have access to one of these. I'm lucky, my neighbor has one )
-Machine press new bearing onto assembly.
-Reassemble everything to torque specs.
