Default My car is Cross Eyed!

Last night it was super foggy up in the local mountains and I could see the tracer of my headlight beams in the fog. The left one was nice and straight, but the right one was pointing over to the left a bit. Years ago I had adjusted the lights up a bit and had a hell of a time finding the hi/low adjusters. Now I’m having an even harder time finding the left/right adjusters, my car expert friend and I looked for about an hour today and couldn’t find them.

Where are they? And any tips on adjustment.

There is no horizontal adjustment. If they are off, it's because of accident damage or improper installation.

there are two adjusters in fact.. take it from a guy whos been elbow deep in them recently.

Let me open me photobucket and show you some internal pics. One is done by a nasty tight thumb screw.. that makes me think thers actually a neat wrench available for its teeth somewhere.. as its not muchof a thumb screw.. the other requires removal of a small metal cap and then its i belive either a 6mm or an 8mm socket to adjsut it.

Thers three points in an 06 headlight.. one is stationary, and the other two can be used to point those things anywhere you want.

Mine needs an alignment b/c ever since I opened it up, the light seems to sit low I feel like I could have a few more feet in terms of vision.

now knowing where to adjust them ( screws etc), there are also threads on how they should be aligned properly on here too.. there's cut offs that should line up, and they arent straight.. due to US roads and oncomming traffic.. search em up .. plus the approx distance from the garage door youre aiming them at, height from the ground etc if youre stock etc.. Ill be doing the same soon enough when i have to re aim mine.. as mine have been fully apart, projectors out etc.

You're talking about internal adjustments, as in remove the headlights and get inside it, right?

I'm definitely re-aiming mine in the future. I just don't feel like doing it all over again anytime soon

Bmccann, you’re not just a pretty face to me anymore, the information about a removable cap was the key to me finding the elusive left/right adjuster. There are some very good tutorials and links on this forum covering the up/down headlight adjustment, but none for the left/right adj. In fact I have searched the whole internets without success. The factory service manual is very skimpy on headlight adjustments and only shows a fleeting reference diagram showing the up/down adjusters.

Looking at the left headlight assembly, just below and to the left of the front corner of the air filter box I spied a gray green steel cap. It’s tucked in between a brace so although you can pry it lose with a small screwdriver you can’t grab hold of it preventing it from falling in to the abyss. At this point I drove over to my retired friend’s house for help. He put a little magnet on the cap, pried it loose and lifted it up and out of the way. Eureka, there hiding behind the cap was the same type of adjuster as the up/down one. Formed into the plastic of the headlight was a slot to guide a #2 Phillips screwdriver that engages the teeth of the adjustment wheel (just like the up/down adjuster) and as a bonus there was also a 8mm bolt head on the back of the adjuster wheel as an alternative way to turn it. Here are a couple of quick pics the removable cap is sitting on the air box. It’s raining cats and dogs right now so I’ll adjust the headlights tomorrow. Can take more pictures if anybody needs them.

Here is another picture showing a screwdriver engaging the teeth on the adjuster wheel, this is the preferred way to do it as it takes a lot of turns to affect much movement of the beam. I can hardly wait to get a little more light on to the right side of the road for making right turns into dark corners. edit my car is an 04 roadster.

@:Jennifer 2
how did you get to this?? did you have to remove the light? or can you get to it from under the wheel by removing the plastic?

CircleHeart, both adjustments can be done from the top. Are you trying to do the up/down adjustment, as there is some very good write ups on this site? Here is a link with great pictures for raising or lowering the aim of the lights. http://www.hypersprite.com/auto/tech-z-003/index.asp
Most people find 03 to 05 lights (with the abrupt cutoff on the low beam) to be set too low from the factory and raise them up a bit.

I could not find any info for aiming the lights to the left or right anywhere on the net. In fact I looked forever to find the adjuster mechanisms and was starting to believe the posts on my350z that stated that there was no horizontal adjustment. Bmccann’s tip about the metal cap led me to discover the hiding spot (see my picture and write up) I can post more pics if you need it, as I’m going to get my friend to help me adj my errant right hand light in the next few days.

Circleheart, have you located the gray green steel caps covering the horizontal headlight adjusters yet? The adjusters turn smoothly and easily, but have a very fine thread so it takes a lot of turns to effect much movement of the light assembly. Both the high and low beam move together. If by chance it’s only your high or low beam that’s out of whack, check to be sure the bulb is seated correctly in its receptacle. If it’s in crooked that can throw the aim off.

By the way, don’t lose the steel caps. They lock the adjuster wheels in place and keep them from vibrating out of adjustment. The up/down adjusters don’t have caps, as they turn more stiffly and don’t need locking caps (which is a good thing because they would be impossible to get at).

I still haven’t found the time to get my right light perfect yet. Lately my BF, his mother, his sisters and all the other shirttail relatives have kept me run off my feet. I’m their scullery maid, concierge, personal shopper, and general indentured slave.
