similar issue here a year ago ended up changin the thermostat and no overheating since then. i would not run the car when its overheating unless u want to buy a new engine soon.

Check the voltage output on the temperature sending unit. If it's not giving a smooth voltage increase as the temp goes up, then it's bad.

You can check the thermostat with a laser IR temp reader. When the coolant temp reading equals the threshold operating temperature on the thermostat, it'll open and the coolant temp will go down. If the coolant temp just keeps getting hotter, or if the temp never changes (and it's warm outside), then the thermostat's either stuck open or closed and needs to be swapped out.
