Default When to change Fluids in car

My gf car is a 08 Automatic and it has 51K miles, the old owner have not change or flush any fluids, all she did was change the oil every 3K miles. I look at all the fluids and it look like in a good level and all very clean. We took to dealer and they say we need to flush coolant and change transmission fluid when we take in for oil change. Is this legit? or they making money off us.

The first thing I do when I buy a car is change all the fluids; oil in the engine, gearbox, differential, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid. Filters and belts, too. That way you know when everything was done, and that high-quality fluids and parts are used. After that, follow the recommended intervals, or more frequently.

Dean has been practicing what I follow: change all the fluids on a used vehicle to make sure. Regarding your dealership's recommendations--at a minimum--change your coolant as it's been over seven years since that's been done at the factory. Antifreeze and distilled water are due to be changed at this point.

+1 Both.

Baselining your car is at worst, cheap insurance, at best, peace of mind.

Definitely change coolant. Definitely change transmission fluid, it'll make a difference. Change the belts. Consider changing the differential fluid. Check the air filter.

Do I just let them put in their standard fluid from Nissan? Or should I be getting something better to put in the car? My 04 has over 100K miles and I have only changed oil on it so far, guess I have to go change everything in that also.

The OEM stuff Nissan sells is of course fine, too. Some dealers will substitute cheaper generic fluids, though, so ask. Just follow the recommended intervals. With the HR there's only 1 belt, but 2 air filters.

I picked up 2 air filters today at walmart, the old one doesnt look remotely dirty at all, but i replaced it anyway. Will take car to dealer to change coolant, they called it a flush, i think they using generic nissan oil.

OK--another terminology correction for you--there is no "generic Nissan oil" and certainly none used in your cooling system. Talk about it that way with your automotive related friends and you'll get laughter. Antifreeze is a glycol solution that is added to distilled water to both prevent corrosion and lower the freezing point of water to prevent damage in winter. Your education continues...
