Scan Tool Options
Is there a affordable OBDII scan tool ($100-$300) that gives me the capability to permanently turn off the downstream o2 sensor? I would get a tune, but I'm in the market for a code reader. I have a 350z hr with Off Road Pipes, it has angled o2 bungs and all, but that annoying CEL keeps reappearing.

a scan tool does just that... scan. you will need to have it tuned to turn them off. you could try defoulers or the steel wool tricks. most uprev tunes will cost ya about $700, but you prob need it anyway (depending on your mods) you are prob running lean
Damn. It is pretty much a stock Nismo, ORPs and Nismo intakes. Possibly has a clutch upgrade, but not sure. I had a SVT Focus with a aluminum flywheel, the 350z seems to rev just as fast. Only thing with the Z is the clutch chatter is less audible. From reading, The 350z transmission makes all sorts of noise to begin with.
Anyway, Thanks for the info!

Just to add to Trav's comments, the Z's sophisticated diagnostic system will continue to activate a CEL once it finds a performance parameter out of range. So even the best scan tool won't help much if you leave the basic problem unaddressed. Having a tool like UpRev's Cipher allows you to check all three systems (ABS, BCM and ECM) and pull codes. It also has limited tuning properties, but you'll need the sister program, Osiris, to allow the tuner to do the job right.

On most OBD-II equipped cars, one cannot "permanently" shut off a CEL and to do so isn't a smart thing to do either. Think of it like you would a heart monitor... shutting it off isn't going to make the problem go away.
In any event, both Trav (travlee) and David (dkmura) both have excellent points and just to add to the discussion, I use an Innova 3160 scanner (IIRC... it's out in my toolchest and too lazy to brave the rain to double check).
Well, I should say, I have an Innova scanner.... only used it twice... Once to see if it worked and another on my non-Z (which was a bust because that car requires it's own specific reader to really make any difference). Haven't had to use it since. Knock wood....

Only reason I bought the Innova unit is that's what we used to use in the shop I managed a few years ago and got it direct from mfgr rep. We also used to carry and use the Autel and Actron units, both which seemed pretty robust.
If all you want to do is basic code reads, do re-sets, you don't need to spend a lot of money. You can spend $50 (or less FTM) for a basic unit or you can spend a couple hunskis on one that supports live data, enhanced data logging, etc.
Good luck!

I bought an Innova, doesn't support alot of the systems and I get an error code.
I checked their website and the ones that are $150 or less don't work with 350's. I didn't look at the more expensive ones.
