Default Oil pressure light

well, when I go for a spirited driving run and come to a stop, my oil pressure light will come on and then disappear. It only comes on the first stop and after that it goes away for a while and will come on after another random run. The oil level is fine, oil pressure seems to be fine, oil is fresh, no oil leaks that I am aware of, the oil pressure sensor is new, engine runs and pulls great. Should I be super concerned? This has been an issue for a long time, i just don't usually notice the light as it only comes on for a slight second and sometimes I will catch it out the corner of my eye. Could the sensor be failing prematurely?

I would appreciate any advice. It's making me paranoid.

Thank you.

I had to change the oil pressure sending unit on my 2003 350z. I noticed that the sender required changing because my oil pressure gauge stopped working. I'm not sure it this sender also controls the light.

I *may* have fixed the issue although I am not positive yet. If I didn't I will change the sensor again, if that doesn't fix it then I'll be tackling the oil galley gaskets.

The light started to come on almost every 4-5 stops and I got desperate and I decided to switch from 5w-30 Castrol HM to 0w-40 Mobil 1 euro car formula.. the light no longer comes on (it's been about 100 miles and a good bit of them are me trying to get the light to come on)
i read to try this here somewhere. The oil pressure seems to be better all throughout the RPM range. I don't know if this is a temporary fix or if my car just didn't like the Castrol HM 5w-30 (it was my first time running it, and when I started using it the light came on much more often)

Anyone have any input?

thanks

Check your pressure using a gauge not the built in pressure sending unit they are not accurate. Better to spend 30$ than many hours and hundreds of dollars replacing the gaskets. It will also tell you if you just need a new sending unit.

Using 0W-40 is not a fix although it may help. You are increasing pressure but not necessarily increasing flow to where it should be. When you check your pressure to see if the gallery gaskets are bad you should be using 5W-30 as that is what the pressure is specified with.

this really started happening when I switched to Castrol HM 5w-30, the day after is when it started becoming an actual issue (it did happen before but I believe it was due to needing oil changes) don't know exactly why or how it could've contributed to anything, but I don't know if it's a coincidence or not. Seems unlikely.

Also; I will be buying one of those gauges and testing as you recommend. I didnt replace the sensor with OEM sensor and I suppose that is the extremely likely cause as well; maybe it's just too sensitive or is beginning to fail.

thank you for the response.

If you ever got the light from low oil level you might have more problems like worn bearings. If you always had enough oil then maybe the Castrol HM 5w-30 was just thinner than whatever you were using before.

I am hoping that is all the issue was, as everything is running great now. Ive driven a few hundred miles already and driven fairly hard a good bit, and haven't had a single issue since changing the oil.

Seems like it's too easy of a fix, though. So we'll see! I'll keep this updated just in case anyone else needs advice in future.
