Exclamation Erratic idle after throttle body cleaning!!

Whats up guy. Just bought an 07 350Z last Friday, 147000 miles. Replaced the spark plugs. Cleaned the throttle bodies. Started the car and it was not idling right. It was revving up by itself, going back and forth from about 1500 to 2200 RPMs. When you drive it at low RPMs and barely let off the throttle its very jurky. Same jurkyness when you apply the gas at low RPMs. After about 3000 RPMs it seems to run normal. Although my gas milage is now hovering around the 10-14MPG all the time. I took it to Nissan and they ran an ECM reset, Idle volume learn, and some other resets. They said the ECM was not responding to the resets and I should START with replacing the ECM. Don't have $1700 to throw at a new ECM that Nissan claims may or may not fix the issue. A lot of people on the forums were saying it's a vacuum leak. I have a homemade smoke machine that I hooked up to each intake boot and found no smoke leaking anywhere which kind of worries me. Any suggestions as to what the issue is?

if you touched or moved the butterfly in the throttle bodies at all, you might need to replace them. The gears are very sensitive

The gears are not that sensitive.

There should be an external bolt that sets the idle air volume. you can adjust that. But it does sound like a vac leak which is extra air being consumed at idle.

What happened is you may have swapped them side to side?

If you moved the blades, you shouldn't need to replace them, but you might need to do a closed position relearn. Google it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Im going to take both intake boots off today and do a throttle valve closed position learn. If I don't see the butterflies move Ill know the ECM isn't responding and Ill have to replace the ECM. Wish it was a vacuum leak.

Can we make a sticky that says "DON'T CLEAN YOUR THROTTLE BODY"
I've never seen ANY post of someone cleaning it and it being beneficial

Have you fixed this yet? If so how did you do it? I have the same issue right now!

"Never touched the engine at all. Have replaced throttle bodies"

Okay, so which is it?

Did it ever throw a code that led you to change out the throttles or was that decision only based on the symptoms? Did you replace the throttles with aftermarket or OE parts? Have you tried to do a relearn using a Consult or a computer that has an active bidirectional idle air learning function (where you don't have to do the pedal dance?)

I changed them with an OE set that we’re working on a car with 30k , mine worked on that car. I have a Snap-on Verus pro and I’ve tried with a new Solus ultra and a modis. All instructed to do the pedal dance then after verifying throttle bodies working it tries a self test in which it never completes because the idle is bouncing. I’ve tried disconnecting up to 3 injectors and all it does is misfire whole surging, never lowers idle enough. Disconnected and plugged pcv valve and still no change

Did you try to clean the MAF? Are the intake volume parameters coming out normal on a live scan? Also, are you using an aftermarket intake?

It sucks ***** that the Snap-on is saying you have to do the pedal dance. My Autel does the relearn automatically. I was working on a G35 running a high idle over the weekend and it went without a hitch.

If all else fails, you could try the NDSII app with an android device and a Bluetooth OBDII ELM327 (don't go cheap) hookup. Some people have reported success with that.

Ordered this one today. Blows my mind that my 8k scanner won’t do what a 21.00 one with a free app will!!

Yeah, I was kind of debating where to go with a new diagnostic computer and watched a YouTube video on the South Main Auto channel, where the guy was going on about Snap-On vs. Autel vs. OTC. He was clearly frustrated with how unreliable his $10K Snap-On tool was and how his cheaper Autel and OTC tools had more functionality and were more reliable.

After getting sick of my antique AutoEnginuity PC and an equally antique Sun/Snap-On 2-channel scope, I was debating on whether to upgrade with an Autel or a Launch (It stuck with me how OTC basically abandoned their Genisys tool after a relatively short lifespan.) I decided to go with with Autel when they went on a fire sale on Amazon around Christmas. I ended up snagging a MaxiSys MS906BT with a MP408 4-channel lab scope for cheap. So far, I've been really happy with it.

Still, if you can get an app that will do the ONE THING you need to do, then hell, why not?

Did you get it fixed? If you need a ecm I wouldn't buy it in person at a dealership. There a nissan dealer Fred Haas that sells most of their service parts at wholesale prices. I had the same issue and bought my ecm from them for less then half the price you quoted.
