Lightbulb Let's talk power steering for a second

06 rev up 100k miles

After a session at the track my power steering fluid comes off the top of the reservoir. At first I thought it was boiling and expanding and to remedy this I upgraded the power steering cooler which gave me extra capacity (at least double the factory cooler) and I replaced the fluid with Redline synthetic. Same issue still happens.

Then I read this: https://www.fluidpowerworld.com/aera...us-cavitation/
If I understand this correctly what is happening in my case is cavitation. Also searching the forums extensively I read that this only affects some cars with or without track use.

So then the fluid is creating bubbles and this is causing the fluid to "expand" and flow over. It seems that what I need to do is to add a larger reservoir, this way if there is "expansion" (or whatever the technical term is) the fluid level can go up and down as it needs without exiting the tank.

I was looking at external universal reservoirs and found this one: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/a...6132/overview/ It increases capacity to around 1.3L, has a "vented" cap and an internal baffle (claims to help prevent foaming and cavitation as fluid returns to the tank).

I wanted to run this by people who 1, have had this issue, and 2, who have done something about it since they abuse their cars like me

Replacing the PS pump is also an idea but more expensive also. Ideas on all of this?

Have you changed your compression rod bush to spherical? That will help and lighten steering effort significantly. I take it you are lowered, which exacerbates the issue on rubber bushings...especially aftermarket rubber/poly bushings, which can increase resistance vs. OEM. Which is why SPL is your best option, if rules allow.

Whatever you do..don't by a weapon-r one. Cavitation and small. I had to modify mine to work.

You definitely want one with a swirl type return. Cavitation can kill your pump.

How old is your pump? Mine failed when i was on track at CMP...fun times rolling into the dirt and losing 3 sessions. I would go ahead and replace it. I am gonna do my clutch master before my next event.
