I just got a 2004 350Z Touring convertible and the drivers headlight beam is awful. I'm not used to these new style headlights, just older American Muscle Car type. My problem is the low drivers beam goes out about 50 ft and suddenly stops and the road past that is dark. If you stood about 100 ft in front of the car, your legs would be lit up but your upper body would be in the dark. Is this normal or how can I raise the beam? I am also confused on whether I have Halogen or High Output headlights. From what I have read on the forum, only the base model has Halogen, BUT this car has replacement, Eagle Eye DS657 headlights and I think those are Halogen. Their ads don't really say. Is this possible? Please put up with me as I learn this car. Many thanks.
Post a picture so I can confirm, but it appears you have low beam HID projectors and your high beams are halogen - similar to the HID 03-05 headlights.
Based on the nature of the projector with HID bulbs, there will be a sharp cutoff and no light will go higher than the cutoff This is meant to focus the light on the foreground as opposed to other driver's eyes (like a$$holes who drop in HID bulbs into their stock halogen reflector housings).
Your beam pattern should look like this when you are aimed at a wall or other flat vertical surface. The "step" where it is higher on the right is normal (at least here in the states with LHD)
If it does not or the cutoffs do not line up, then you can adjust them. I'm not sure if the Eagle Eyes adjustment is different than OEM, but there is a screw that you turn with a long-handled phillips screwdriver which drives a small gear.
Thanks for the reply. I read several of your posts to others about lights so I hoped you might reply. What do you want a picture of? I hate learning all about a new car. Lost my car in Hurricane Ian and got a great deal on this one. great shape but I know nothing about them. Was a corvette man for decades then Grand Nationals for last 30 years.
Just a picture from the front, but basically, if it looks like this with one tiny projector and the H1 halogen bulb underneath, then it's the earlier style 03-05 HID headlights.
The D2R bulb is HID (high intensity discharge) and the projector focuses the light to make that sharp cutoff. The H1 halogen bulb is for the high beam and that will basically scatter light everywhere.
Snap a picture of the headlights shining at a wall or garage door and post it up here. It could be something as simple as the HID bulb not being correctly/securely seated in the back of the housing. As far as adjustment, look on the back to see if there is a **** or other type of cog wheel.
Since you're new to this platform, I would recommend downloading the FSM (factory service manual) if you're a hands-on DIY kind of guy (or gal).
Sorry it took a while. Here is a pic of the Eagle Eye light. At least I will now know what kind of bulbs it has. I don't have a wall to check the headlight alignment bu
t will check out the adjustment. Thanks bunches.
at first is hard to find where the adjustment gear is at but its there. You will definitely need a long philips screwdriver. As you turn the screwdriver it may seem like nothing is moving but it is so be patient. Thats why its best to do it on a garage door or some sort of vertical wall
