its solid plastic, on the passenger side theres the glove box in the plastic, on the other side(touring) is the subwoofer. between the seat and this plastic is nothing... if you push the seat back all the way, there is no space there.

I keep my umbrella behind the seat. if your thinking of a subwoofer or something behind there, youd have to either move your seat up, or recess it into the plastic, and Im not sure exactly how much room is behind that.

I think what cotmfk was referring to is two small compartments, about the size of a pull out head unit. These do not lock. There is also the glove box, which is pretty big (for a "glove box") that locks. As ares said, the seats can take up all the room behind them. There also seems to be quite a bit of space behind the seats, on the floor, even with the seats all the way back, but it is not easily accessable.

For practicality and as a girlie who carries a purse, it's a toss up between whether I put my purse and computer backpack on the passenger's seat or floor or I open the hatchback and toss them back there. It's a pain to put something in the "way back" from the driver's side and retrieve it - but it feels more cumbersome to try to put something in between the seat and that cliff wall of plastic speakers/dvd/glove boxes.

Umbrella is about right - or your road atlas (passenger seat does have a seat pocket/net thingy for atlases).

Personally, I toss my empty cd cases for whatever CD's I'm listening to in the "big glove box" and keep my cell phone in the little one, since it's the only place to put when I'm using the charger.

There is a cargo net that I saw on the japanparts.com site that keeps stuff in front of the strut brace, might be useful.

LUGGAGE SPACE SEPARATOR NET

If I can find one from a US dealer, I will probably get one.
