Hey look you can't use that argument. A Corvette is a Chevy but guess what a Vette can outperform plenty of cars twice and three times its price.

 

Well, a built, nitrou'd F-body mustang is still a Ford, and can outperform cars in a straight line that are many times its price, but does that mean I'd take it over a porsche? no.

 

Right... but everyone seems to think otherwise depending on the scenario, for example many people have said how much of a waste of money the 997 Turbo is when you can get a similar-performing car for 70k like the GT-R instead of 125k.

because the gtr and turbo have very similiar performance specs. The 997 base is far better than the Z... it's only 3000 lbs, has a history of incredible track performance, and its engine produces a lot more power than the Z. And I think the rear engine placement allows for less drive train loss than the Z. There's no comparing the two, the 997 is beyond the stock Z.

 

the 997 better be better for more than double the price!

on the porsche website, 997 base curb weight for manual is listed at 3075 lbs
nissan lists the base 350z at 3320lbs

dunno if you think porsches 3.6L 325hp vs the 3.5L 306hp is a LOT more power... or 273lb ft vs 268lb ft of torque

difference we're talking about an extra 19HP and 5lb-ft tq at the crank... 911 lighter by 245lb curb weight, but an extra $45,380

although you do get the rear engine layout

but for an extra $45K you saved, i think you could spend that wisely on mods and come out with the winner

 

Depends on your definition of a winner. As I read in another post made by another forum member: In matters such as these, it boils down to whether buy a car to DRIVE it or if you buy a car to have others admire you/it.

So, yes technically you could build a faster, more heavily built Z that would destroy anything short of a 997 turbo and you'd be a winner in that regard. But for pure poseur perfection many would probably opt for the porsche. Not trying to take a side, just playing devil's advocate.

 

This is definitely true, lets just take that extra 45k and attribute it to the Porsche name, the 911 styling, and overall exclusivity of owning a Porsche. With that aside, I think the performance specs on the 997 base and Z are CLOSE enough that they could be compared for driving only. Not styling, not brand name, just performance. That's why I want to know!
